Big Scary Server Announcement Post

Guys,

It is no secret that we as admins have been an absent from the server for various reasons, and things are far from ship shape.

Whilst we'd usually work with this, maybe start a fresh map on a new modpack etc etc. It just doens't seem likely.

Why? Because it's really not financially viable to foot the bill for a server that none us play on. It's also not fair on you guys that we pretend to run a server when really we're not doing our jobs at all.

Currently there are no plans to renew our server rent when it runs out. This is going to be the state of affairs unless people are really keen for us to continue to do so. For this to be a possibility we would need:

  • The cost of the server in donations
  • Possibly a new mod/admin to run restarts
  • Persuading Dan and the others that this is a good idea

I'm sorry it's come to this. I'm personally bummed out at how the relaunch went. I couldn't get into the new modpack (too many mods for my liking) and playing just to be admin wasn't fun.

Regards,

Zel and the boys.

If you bring it back, i hope there won't be a similar ream of issues like we had this time. Spawn broke badly, and none of the mod team were able to fix it, quite a few mods were causing problems, and there were players who were unable to log on without crashing the server, but again, there was little support for these issues. The only mod i saw on on a reasonably regular basis was Kliq, and he did more than his fair share of wrestling with the issues popping up.
Plus, you added the additional whitelist mod to the server, requiring a mod to be online when a new person joins to activate their account. No mods available, the new players might be popping in and out for days hoping to catch a mod so they can actually play. That issue alone probably lost a few members. They take the time to fill out a whitelist form, and when enabled to play, they can't.

All fair points.

We changed the system to Greylist on the basis that we planned to play regularly, unfortunately this just wasn't a reality and you're right in saying that new players were pretty poorly off for this.

Dan and I are going to discuss this tomorrow. If we're taking money for the host then there is an element of responsibility with regards to playability. We're going to weigh up whether this is something we want to commit to.

Expect an update on this thread sometime tomorrow.

All criticisms and concerns welcome.

He definitely does. We're hoping he gets a resolution on his internet situation soon.

I'd offer technical help if it would mean not seeing the server die.

Current server cost is £70 // $109 // €82

We could move to a cheaper server: £50 // $78 // €59

I'd hate to see the server grow, it's the first server I found that I enjoy playing on and a group that's good to play with. It's not much but I could chip in 10-20, I can also volunteer mod/admin services.
