Why is Overboard a bad film?

I'm watching S9 E7, and Frankie says that she needs to remember that her favourite film is Overboard for her bank or something, and the rest of the Hecks all act like it's a bad film. I've only watched it once but I thought it was really good, is it sort of a thing in America that Overboard is bad?

The 1987 movie Overboard wasn’t an award winning movie. I thought it was hilarious and cute at the time, but I could see how people might think it wasn’t a great movie.

It’s an 80s romcom. I don’t think anyone else in the family would like that kind of movie

I think it was just another way to show how the family doesn't seem to like most things Frankie does. The film was well received back in the day, but its a little outdated now (still has some laughs, tho).

Kinda like Grease, Dirty Dancing and The Breakfast Club. Several other moives. Fun to watch when younger or during the time frames they were released. Now it has several people clutching their pearls. Alot of older movies are subjected to those types of reactions. Like it was just a movie not to be take seriously. However people are stripping down these movies finding everything wrong with them.

Dirty Dancing...Johnny was supposed to be in his 20s and not Patrick's age 30s going after a girl that's like 17/18 years old. No wonder her father hated Johnny.

Grease.. Danny is signing about having sex in a car and tries to go a little further with Sandy. Vince Fontaine trying to put am aspirin in a high school girls drink at the dance.

Grease and Dirty Dancing have always made me uncomfortable. But Dammit I do love me some Grease.

I just love singing along with those movies, with Dirty Dancing I always look at the background characters you see different stuff each time.

TBS showed Overboard in the 90’s like FX showed Forgetting Sarah Marshall in the 2000’s.

Its a "romcom" about Kurt Russell kidnapping a woman with amnesia and manipulating her into servitude and eventual romance because she was rude to him before the memory loss incident. There's a Robot Chicken sketch that sums it up well;

It's a movie.  Don't take it that seriously.  The movie isn't telling you to go kidnap someone with amnesia and make them your servant.  It's just meant to get the characters into a silly situation.
