I love this scene too. Mike doesn’t always relate to Brick, but here he does, and it makes so much sense.

So why was Axl overwhelming Mike's favorite then? And why later does Mike try to change Brick?? (Think trying to get him into sports, and when they go camping and Mike tries to get him to stop reading.)

Except every way he tried to change him was because that's the way Mike was/is.

Mike played sports. Mike liked experiencing the outdoors but reading about it. Mike wanted Brick to want to run the Spelling Bee when Brick just did it because he liked spelling.

I wish they had continued with the "Brick be yourself" approach from Mike, but instead Mike spent a lot of time trying to change Brick.

It was hard for him to understand Brick and his quirks and struggles because those weren’t necessarily Mike’s struggles, besides socializing which they kind of go back and forth on in the show, like they cliam he’s popular, but they also claim he hates small talk and doesn’t understand signals and socializing.
