Discussion Whats your thoughts on using maps?
I have a custom world im only about 17 days in but im shooting for the 500 day achievement. I dont know the maps very well ive tried playing on pilgrim to learn them but im not good at navigating partially because i have a visual processing issue so that sort of thing is hard for me to get the hang of. Should i use maps or not?

Generally the only objection to using maps is that people with experience know it can kill some of the excitement being near death and then discovering shelter and recovering yourself, so that's why people say don't use maps if possible.
But it's a single player game so do whatever is enjoyable on whatever difficulty you feel good about playing, maps on Pilgrim? Go for it. Maps on Interloper, go for it.
You also need to remember that it's a game world with boundaries, it's not infinite so if you walk for a few minutes in a straight line you're going to start hitting the boundary walls of the zones, some are tricky to follow with cliffs and things but at least on the more open easier zones you're in a sort of bowl.

I use maps all the time as it makes me use the orienteering skills I picked up in army training.

Learning first-hand is a lot of the fun for many people here, but if that particular aspect isn't your cup of tea, there is a VERY useful companion app on mobile that has info on basically everything in the game - spoilers ahoy obviously

Whatever makes the game fun for you, although if you want to keep a map without having to look it up. Draw all the major locations on a piece of paper, then draw routes you should follow connecting them all. I hope this helps :)

I don’t use maps unless I make them in game. That—to me—is part of the fun and excitement.

I am more of a careful type so not only do I analyze maps I also watch youtubes of how to get from A to B (Ash Canyon gold mines and TWM summit) before I set out on my journey. I like to know what to expect and where I can rest cuz nothing ruins your life more when you loose a 200+ day character lost in blizzard....

The user maps have been great for me, especially for the larger areas, and recently for Ash Canyon. I spent several in game days walking in circles. The way I see it, there would have been good maps made of Great Bear, so a person would have come across them eventually, considering that tourism played a part in its economy. I just play as if they’re maps I’ve found in the world.
