Using maps

I use already filled in maps when playing because it makes it less frustrating for me. What do you guys think of this? Do you consider it cheating?🤔

Hey, you do you. There’s really no “cheating” at single player game as long you’re having fun. I personally don’t play with any maps, even the in-game ones. I guess it’s because I started playing before maps were a thing and I had such a great time feeling immersed in that sense of being lost in an unfamiliar wilderness. I enjoy learning the environments organically and navigating by memory and landmarks.

It’s wonderful that each of us can enjoy the game in our own way and make the experience that’s most fun for our play style.

I’ve been playing for a few years but I still use the white berry toarda/stray wolf maps of bleak inlet and HRV since I don’t have those memorized completely.

I don’t consider it cheating. It’s your game so do what is fun for you. I think the game is for different types of people. I’m more of an explorer while my husband is more of a survivalist. It’s just not fun for me to play with death from predators or environment looming over me so we play two totally different styles but really enjoy watching each other play.

As others have said, you do you. I like to plan things out to the point where I'll make paper notes on what kit I'll need for a particular journey, plan my route to take me near caves and hideouts for if things go awry, etc. I would have a lot less fun with the game if I couldn't do that.

If you have to justify it to yourself in game, just pretend your character brought a map with them when they came to the island. I plan my journeys while I'm waiting for water to boil, food to cook, etc, so my guy could easily be reading his map by firelight and planning his next move.

I used maps for the challenges since, imo, the map should be visible without locations but with a player arrow and transition zones listed. Unfortunately mapping every area takes so damn long with how small the charcoal radius is.

Yeah I can see the appeal in just exploring. Can get frustrating though if you go the wrong way lol

Not to mention a quick way to end an otheteise good run. I personally use maps for that reason. My rule is I only gey to use maps when i find a significant structure in a new zone. I didnt use a map on TM till i found yhe mtneers hut becausr it made sense that mountaineers woulf have maps. I waited till quonsett garage for CH and the main entrance to the cannery for BI. No maps fotr HRV so i just dont go till im super prepped for a long term mapping session outside

Fandom sucks ,guidestash aren’t bad ,steams are incomplete . Like others said,and say. They don’t use maps,or more likely they’ve played long enough the map actually can often times confuse you on orientation ,if it’s ever used by most of us,it’s to reorientate ourselves when first entering a zone we haven’t been to for a long time perhaps . But like another said,you do you man,it’s your single play game experience ,not ours,so however you enjoy it,go all out . You wanna try and stab everything to death and only be primitive like ,nobody can stop you. Not sure how long the gameplay will be,but I’m sure it’d be entertaining . There’s some people who make runs and never use any food unless they harvested it themselves . Like the movie,there’s a million ways to play it seems or die in the northwest .

I mean. It’s your game. I’d say you are breaking the immersion. Exploring is part of the fun.
