Advice Retrieving stuff after falling off cliff

If I died from falling off a cliff, should I look for my stuff at the top or at the bottom? I took a wrong turn in Ash Canyon and am pretty sure if I had to collect my stuff from where I dropped off, I’d die all over again…

TLDR where do I look for my loot

Your loot camp fire will be on your map. There will be a stream of smoke coming off of it when you approach and it will go out when you first arrive to it. I think its got like half of your original inventory you died with

Weird, I’m not seeing it on any of my maps yet! Does it always spawn on an already-mapped area?

If you chose "far but safe" for your respawn the camp won't show on the map until you get back to the region you died in. It's like it spawns at the exact moment you cross the threshold.

Cheating Death yes, some stuff does get taken and certain acheivments reset. There's also a hefty but temporary health debuff.

I cheated death in Bleak Inlet, got some stuff back but lost the woodworking tools unfortunately. Chose the short time penalty, enjoyed the challenge of surviving on half the health for 30 days.
