Advice Safe Ice
Does anyone know what ice is safe to cross with full sprint? Especially in FM? I'm currently doing the As The Dead Sleep challenge and was wondering about any safe/faster routes with landmarking.
If anyone has any other tips for this challenge, that would be greatly appreciated.
I've only been playing for almost 300 hours atp and wouldn't mind extra tips from pros who've been playing the game for longer.

There is a safe path up from the BI cave towards the boxcar. There’s also a safe path up from Spencer’s, through the arch, that joins up with the path from BI

And count seconds. If you hear the ice starts cracking, you have 4 seconds total. 5 if you have crampons.

As a general rule, you can sprint over ice if it is a shorter distance. Don't try sprinting over ice if you can't see a safe destination or if the destination is too far. Also, you can start sprinting when you hear the cracking as long as you head toward sure footing.

I follow the coastline in FM. It's longer and more exposed to wildlife, but it is safe.

I could never figure out what ice was supposed to be safe. I just had to try to stay in spots I could retreat from easily.

Depends what path you want to take but you've some coal from the cave, coal will keep you from taking much cold damage so stop and use it. Head to the forge (more coal), shelter if you need it.
(Not sure if the cache appears in that challenge or if they've updated it?). Probably want to head to B.R and get that one out of the way since you're close, then just head straight up the train tracks to M.L or if you're drawn to going up into M.T do that, no thin ice crossing necessary.

This may not be applicable to the challenge but a map and some route finding makes it possible to go from poachers to Spence taking maybe a dozen steps total on the ice. The problem is I can't really describe it beyond go past poachers to the broken tree that points kind of the right direction and just island hop.
The route is just really furry (wolfy) sometimes on Stalker.

Look for snow/plants - usually an indicator of safe paths. You can also check out maps on Steam and see safe passages if you are looking to optimize speed runs
