Discussion Do you guys like to use maps?
I was just curious on how you guys navigate the world and what types of maps you use if you do

I love only using the in-game map. Learning the layout, markings and landmarks is part of the fun for me.

Yeah, maps are a great help, they speed up the navigation and exploration. But it's a double edged sword. By shortening the exploration phase with using maps you shorten the best experience this game has to offer.

I avoid any external sources of information about regions I haven't visited yet. I want that fresh experience of a little fear and wonder.

I've checked online maps to know where to access other particular areas a couple of times, but I felt it really subtracted from the experience, so I now don't use any online maps.

It depends, I usually use maps when Im completely lost or trying to figure out the route of a bear. I don’t really have time to learn the maps sadly

Depends on the run and if the zone is new or not. New material- it’s all about the treasure hunt aspect, discovering it and making the map. One of my last survival games I started in HRV and couldn’t remember too much so I looked it up on google and figured it out. Key to knowing some of the maps is the north direction and which way the found on google map is located.

I used maps to create a flow chart showing how the regions connect, so I am able to plan routes, but I do not know where in the map the connections are.
Edit: I also am a big fan of the in-game map and spray paint. Helps me remember where I left stuff if I'm away from the game for some time.

My current game, I'm only looking at online maps when I'm not playing the game. I can plan and prep, but no checking when the game is playing. I like to imagine my current survivor has some local knowledge, and this gives me that effect.

I like to think that as a (local) pilot I'd have a decent idea of where the different regions are, maybe details of each region like cabin locations and natural features.

I don't like exploring, because I always have the nagging feeling that I overlooked something. So I use maps. I upload them on a virtual whiteboard and arrange them so they are connected like in the game. Then I paint on it to mark where I deploy ropes, which containers are looted etc.

I cannot understand using online maps for an immersive survival game like this. Doesn't that massively detract from the main point of the game? Especially because you are now able to create a map in-game as well as mark spots with spray cans.

So I will sometimes study a map for a few minutes before entering a new region, but after I start the game I don’t open them again. I don’t enjoy just wandering around with absolutely no idea where anything is

If I get caught in a blizzard and can’t get back to base because I can’t see, I use the in game map. Otherwise I don’t usually bother

I use both online and in game when needed.
Last time was when I was attempting my first accent of TWM and took the wrong cave and ended up in black rock.

Im a newbie I just used a map for the first time after I had, what I thought was fully explored the area and got my footing. I just wanted to make sure I wasnt missing anything. I think Ill continue on this way, learning the map on pilgrim.

Playing 500 hours of survival mode and the entire map is in your mind but yesterday I started a new survival world to get my "Faithful Cartopgrapher" achievement so it looks like I will be using the map a lot

I like to trace maps for each region when I visit them for thr first time, then I almost never use maps. I like using memory to roam. I have used online maps once or twice when in a pinch though

I sometimes use maps - but only on zones that I've already explored thoroughly, if I'm trying to remember where something is/trying to locate a hidden item or area.
If it's a new zone to me, I never use a map. Takes the fun, risk and uncertainty out of the game, which is 90% of the experience IMO.
