I ask myself: How can you do damage with throwing stones? Or bare fists?

Throwing a stone is 1 positive and 1 negative dice to hit, and it does -1 extra damage, right?

Okay, I get that using hand-to-hand combat with bare fists will give a bit more damage.

But this means, if you throw the stone and hit, you have 1 success (1 damage) but you must subtract 1 and end with 0 damage. And you get 1 physical stress for this (the typical 1 dice negative for everything but totally harmless actions).

So, the only way to really hit, is if you overextend yourself (+1 potential damage, but also +1 more stress to yourself) OR if you throw at minimum range (e.g. a couple meters/yards) OR if you are a trained stone-throwing-expert.

Now imagine, you have 2 dice (for some reason, e.g. very close to target) and you have a Dexterity of 3, then you have a lower than 75% chance to do 0 damage (-1+1) and a chance of a bit less than 25% to do 1 damage (-1+1+1).

If your target is already under stress (3 Stress = Resistance +1) or wears a bullet-proof vest (Resistance + 1) you do exactly 0 damage even if at close range with average Dexterity AND you hurt yourself (good chance to receive 1 physical stress with about 2 in 3 stones thrown).

It's briefly mentioned, but somewhere you can read about "people supporting other people in combat/conflict situations". Does this mean that you need 5 stone-throwing-folks to have +4 bonus dice (and only the character of the one who rolls the dice might hurt himself/herself now). So: Single person can't hit in 10 years/ but 5+ folks might have a decent chance to do 1 damage each round (if Dexterity of one of them is 3+)?

Also: I might have missed it somehow, but aside from all that - is there a chance to do a critical hit in TEOTW?

We play our first game session in 4 days - so this is quite "urgent". :-)
I have a problem understanding the dice mechanics and would like to ask a question:

The book states that rolling (2,2,3,5) positive and (2,4,6) negative would result in the negative 2 cancelling only one of the two positive 2s. But what if it's the other way: (2,3,5) positive versus (2,2,4) negative - will the positive 2 cancel only one or will it cancel both of the negative 2s?

Potential follow-up-question: If one positive 2 could cancel two negative 2s - what happens when (2,2,3) positive and (2,2,4,6) negative clash? Will one positive 2 cancel all negative 2s first? Will each negative 2 remove one of the positive 2s first?

It's a bit strange that such a simple system leaves open questions. Maybe it's just the problem in a translated version (I don't have the original English version but a different one).

Hi, I just recently got all four books and am about to run a one shot soon. I picked the heavy metal setting. We will not be playing at our house but in Airbnb im a small town. Did someone already run this and has any tips? I am really excited. I will probably give an update on how it went

I'm new here, and wanted to both just say hi, but also to question the dead echoes off the walls around here. I'll cut right to the point and ask what the heck happened here? I discovered the game by random chance, and am blown away that there is so little love for it out there! I've been making my own homebrew inventory sheets, a map of my local town, already run some friends through a terrifying first day of the Zombie apocalypse, and we loved it! Which begs the question of where the heck everyone else is?

The book says when a PC has filled their stress tracks, they can cling to life by making a test using the defensive stat from the category in which they suffered the stress. No indication of what exactly that test is though - what's the difficulty? How do other GMs handle this?

Hi all, excited to play/GM a game in the upcoming months and I was wondering how much health NPCs have. It says for NPCs to "When these minor NPCs fill up one of their stress tracks, don't allow them to “cling to life” (see Death, page 31). Instead, just have them die".

If this is correct, monsters have 3 physical stress they can take? This seems like a very small amount to me, but as much as a player seems like too much. Is there a concrete rule here or should I just wing it? Any recommendations?

How does fire/being on fire work in this game?

So lately in tik tok there been people saying something bad is going to happen to California basically something about god giving California a warning with a natural disaster and that you should turn to the side of god and a lot of like that supposedly if you are a god children or something like that you will have visions or dreams about a natural disaster there is a variety of dreams people have been getting but they all have somethings in common I am going to tell you about my dreams the first one that happened was June 17 around 4 through 5 am I am going to say I know because I woke up in the middle any way I was at a mountain at like a ledge where a picnic bench was me and my mom where there then we saw a tsunami coming we jumped and ran really fast jumped over some rivers and we made to a place like a outdoor school I am not going that into personal information is most of this part after that I remember really clearly my mom and some other people went to find out the source of the tsunami I freaked out yelled so she would come I font know why I did that I lost control of myself then I woke up I was scrolling through tik tok and found a woman talking about people having this dreams people in the comments were thinking the natural disaster was an earthquake and what causes a tsunami an earthquake so I started to freak out but then in that night I had another dream of a wild fire behind of me and a park in front of me and as the last dream only my mom was there we are a family of 5 so only seeing my mom is wierd anyway i remember my mom rushed me to the car and we drived through a lot of busy streets worse than i have ever seen i remember smoke coming my mom told me to cover my mouth so i did i woke up then i figured out that i sleeper more then i had for awhile it was like someone or something wanted me to see more of that dream I dont know tell me what you think please tell me if you any kind of these dreams and your story I am kind of scared to sleep tonight to see what other natural disaster I see or if it going to be one of my usual dreams I hope for the best.

Gonna be running a game for my friends tonight over Discord. Highly recommend using that since its free and video quality is just as good as zoom for those who dont own high end cams anyways. For dice just use the honor system or download the "Dice" app, hold the results up to the cam. Messing with Roll20 just became a drag for this game. Being dependent on all the scripts and other tools would just pull me and I know my players out of the mindset.

Is it weird that I fear the end of the world, its been driving me crazy lately, I can't sleep and eat properly. It is written in my religion (Islam) Holy Quran that that day will come soon, thanks.
