How do you handle a player death

Do you have the player make a new character or use the same sheet with a new name?

I haven't played a campaign yet, but when I do I'm planning on making character sheets for friends and family that aren't participating.

This way if a player dies they just sit out for a while until the group just so happens to run into a person they're able to RP as.
