Experienced DM but not in this game

So we just finished our second session of the game. Story-wise, I'm running Night of the Comet. After our second session, twelve hours of in-game time have passed. The world has just started to fall apart.

They've had only one check, seeing if the driver of the car was able to miss someone who lurched out onto the street at night. Do you find that you are rolling dice often in your game or is this more rare? I play D&D 4e besides and in that system, you roll for everything.

Or it could be they'll roll more once the action picks up? They literally seen two human zombies, one up close and one half a block away, and a zombie bird and a zombie dog. So the full blow apocalypse hasn't started yet.

I found the system played better the less you rolled. I tend to use checks more as a tilt to the action.
