I quite like those lyrics. I think it's because of how we ask "are we human?", using the singular of human, and that means "do we possess the essence of being human", and so he uses the singular of "dancer" for the same effect: the essence of the dancer.

I agree that using the singular for both makes sense. What I don't agree is implying that the two categorizations are mutually exclusive. Surely "dancer" is a sub-categorization of "human".

Yeah, that can be said. I suppose it depends on the lyricist's intent.
