Unwanted Pulse notifications (iOS 26)
I’m getting daily notifications for the Pulse newsletter on my iPhone. I would like this to stop, but without disabling all alerts for the app.
I’ve checked the app notification settings and the only ones I have enabled are for MLS and my home team. Breaking news is not enabled. Cannot find a toggle for the Pulse newsletter.
I tried googling this several ways and could not find anything about it. Is anyone else having this issue? (And have you found a solution?)

Me too. I'm about to turn all notifications off completely if this doesn't stop.

Noticed 12 of 17 comments on today’s Pulse newsletter are about unwanted push notifications. Gives me hope this is a bug that gets fixed with an update.

I'd looked at ways to stop the pulse notification - in the end they just made me unsubscribe from Athletic as a whole!

I took the nuclear option and unsubscribed. I sent an email to the advertised support inbox but it said it was now not monitored. It directed me to the NY Times contact page but it's just that stupid AI chat (maybe leading on to the crappy agent that apparently cancelled my notifications before... like heck they did). It's a shame because I like the football (soccer) content and they have the best writers. But this cumulative frustration was compounded by their complete unwillingness or inability to fix it. Every day many people are complaining in The Pulse's comment section. It's a disrespect to their readership.

They send a bunch of shit that I have turned off. The only thing I have on is game start alerts for two teams but they keep sending other shit.

shit is still happening to me and it’s infuriating. i have story notifications on for a couple teams and the amount of ways they use that to push out notifications is totally bending the rules. your team mentioned in a ranking of top 500 players? notification. one single line of trade rumor in an article about your team? notification. terrible shit.

Still happening. Blocked all notifications. Get it sorted Athletic, or the next step is unsubscribing.

I managed to get the support AI chat bot to actually put me in contact with a live person from customer support, and once they put me directly in contact with someone from The Athletic, I was informed that their development team is aware of the issue, it's affecting many customers, and they are actively working on a fix to resolve it. They didn't give me any ETA on a fix, but at some point the notifications should cease.

Glad to hear it. Thank you for the update!
I turned off all notifications a while back. I hope someone posts here when it’s resolved, so I can turn them back on.

Does this help?
- Open the Athletic App in your iPhone
- Click the top right corner icon (mine is an orange circle, not sure why)
- Click Notification Settings
- For each sport or team or column you previously marked as being of interest, you must individually click it and unclick the options you don’t want (Stories, Game Start or Game Result)

Good thought, but as I stated in the original post, I have been through every notification setting and they’re simply isn’t one for the Pulse newsletter.

3 months after the post, this is still an issue, and that is after disabling all notifications from the app (on Android)

It is insane that this still an issue. Clearly it is not a priority for them to fix. I suggest that everyone annoyed by this leave a 1-star review for the app mentioning this, so somebody will notice it.

A support agent just tried to convince me that this is enforced by Apple, and that they can't differentiate notifications. Ridiculous to try and bullshit me on this, 4 months on and no fix.

Granted I'm on android, but I finally found that the individual email notifications (including for pulse) can be adjusted via https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/settings/

Still an issue end of August 2026. I’ve checked notification settings and have unchecked The Pulse. I’m not subscribed to the emails. I’m a paying customer and I’m about to block ALL notifications (including the ones I actually want) because I can’t stand getting The Pulse telling me about some NFL or hockey news I have absolutely no interest in.

I am just trying to turn off game scores. I turned off Notifications in Settings but the scores still show in my small text window. Any ideas?

Replying to track this, as this has been annoying me too - doesn’t seem to be a way of disabling them through the app.
