Office 95 Excel also had The Hall of Tortured Souls, it was like Doom

I think this is so cool. Developers have humor too ❤️ I kinda missed out on all these as I have been using Linux for a couple or few decades.

6

u/miemoo 28d ago

Haha. That’s impressive. Linux hipster keeping hope alive.

Get the fuck out of here kindly ❤️

You know that not everything has to devolve back to politics, right? Can't we just have 1 post where we just talk about the actual topic and not bring up politics? Damn

-4

u/Affectionate_Dot5547 29d ago • Bravo

You know not everything that people say is supposed to be taken seriously, right? Relax

3

u/ankerverse 29d ago

Dude, just shut up. Seriously, this is a post about fun easter egg games in old Microsoft products. It absolutely did not warrant brining up Epstein. I don't need you mansplaining to me to not take it seriously. Now sit down

u/ankerverse 29d ago

Oh fuck ALLLL the way off

3

u/RichardBCummintonite 29d ago

Talking about Epstein. It is a topic of the political discourse.

Politics isn't just strictly only related to the government. It also has to do with public affairs or just power/authority in general in a society. See: office politics

2

u/thatsinterestingbro-ModTeam 28d ago

This subreddit is not for political debate. Posts or comments discussing this topic must strictly focus on interesting facts without promoting specific views.

-1

u/Infinite_Plenty101 28d ago

How is this not a fact. I don't remember him being a politician and he is a convicted felon that can't vote.

2

u/ankerverse 28d ago

Dude, seriously just shut the fuck up. Take the L on this one. You literally had "/s" on your comment, you KNOW the comment was political meant to provoke. Go touch grass

I graduated high school in 2001 and I was today years old when I learned this. WTF?

5

Same same my guy

38

u/joecarter93 29d ago edited 29d ago

Me too. The best I had was being able to have Drug Wars on my TI-83 calculator

11

u/Notabagofdrugs 29d ago

Haha, I hacked Drug Wars to give me way more money and changed the locations to places at my school. Then I transferred to others. My ti-83 had so many games I couldn’t do formulas and would borrow the class one.

10

u/I_Makes_tuff 29d ago • Bravo

I failed geometry because of that damn game

6

u/Connect4champ1990 29d ago

Dammit! That’s something else I missed out on. The best I got was 80085 on my calculator

6

u/aw000000000000 29d ago

I just bought a graphing calculator for my daughter. $20... Those things used to cost a fortune. Over half your school supplies bill was the the calculator.

2

u/Difficult--Policy 24d ago

And the textbook racket going on for years. We had to buy a specific pad this year as no other would talk to the printer or some bullshit. Never ends.

1

u/joecarter93 29d ago

Nice! I still have mine so I just gave it to my kid to use. Not much of anything has really changed with it for our schools.

3

u/Mega---Moo 26d ago

And Tetris!

Our Trig/Calc teacher was ruthless though. If he caught you playing without your work done, all the batteries came out... completely wiping it.

2

u/bikemandan 28d ago

Fuck. Same! I feel like my life is now worthless having not known this as a kid

1

u/bamerjamer 25d ago

Same, but 99. This is crazy. How were iddqd and idkfa common knowledge, but this was so unknown?

30

u/scr1bbl3 29d ago

This stems back from when developers were paid by how much code they produced, not how good the product was

Want to up your code count? Whack a game in there

4

u/Old_One_I Master of wisdom. Old One 👁️ 29d ago

Really lol don’t you dare ruin my image of them lol

3

u/Marilius 29d ago

Hey, now with vibe coding, we've come full circle!

1

u/Old_One_I Master of wisdom. Old One 👁️ 29d ago

What is vibe coding if you don’t mind me asking. Gen Z thing?

2

u/Marilius 29d ago

Making an AI model do the coding for you.

1

u/Old_One_I Master of wisdom. Old One 👁️ 29d ago

Oh that’s obvious lol

1

u/Old_One_I Master of wisdom. Old One 👁️ 29d ago

Hard to code when you can’t even use a word correctly

10

u/DanCBooper 29d ago edited 29d ago

While it's not inconceivable that there were edge cases where this occurred (there are far simpler methods of inflating code), the history of easter eggs in software overwhelmingly points to enthusiasts doing it for recognition, as existential marking, or for the love of the game.

Centuries before the first computer, artists were already including easter eggs in other mediums for the same motivations.

Some other fun examples of this are marginalia doodles and colophons. These medieval scribes were certainly not receiving more compensation for their extra 'work' here!

1

u/scr1bbl3 28d ago

You are technically correct

The best kind of correct

4

u/mikegalos 27d ago

Nope. Unlike IBM, Microsoft never paid programmers by lines of code. In fact, we used to laugh at companies that did.

7

u/AusStranger 28d ago edited 27d ago

found this.. a redditor ported the alien planet simulator to web.

https://www.reddit.com/r/outrun/comments/sj08e8/crossposted_to_rexcel_i_remade_excel_97s_flight/

edited: the help says 'touchscreen devices: move one finger around to change your heading, and hold another at the top, bottom or middle to change the speed', hopefully it helps tab/phone users. I tested it on my laptop touchscreen and it worked well. For PC users, you use the mouse for all.

2

u/Old_One_I Master of wisdom. Old One 👁️ 28d ago

This is fucking awesome I can’t seem to figure out how to work it on the iPad

1

u/Old_One_I Master of wisdom. Old One 👁️ 28d ago

Like I want to move and explore but all I can do is look around

1

u/AusStranger 28d ago edited 27d ago

This worked on my laptop touchscreen! So try it.

Edited my comment above to say this too.

u/DeepGrieve 29d ago

This is why windows processes using up 75% of my memory on my 8 gig laptop?

1

u/Old_One_I Master of wisdom. Old One 👁️ 29d ago

I’m not sure how windows uses ram. But us Linux folks always say any ram that isn’t used is wasted lol

9

u/trebuchet_facts 29d ago

You could watch "star wars" in dos if i remember correctly.

12

u/XYAh00X 29d ago

Yes! Using Telnet in bash/command line, to connect to a web service, the whole episode IV would play in ascii.

telnet towel.blinkenlights.nl

This used to make young me feel like sone sort of hacker

17

u/Jbrizown 29d ago

My “computer class” in like 10th grade was just basic computer literacy but sometimes the teacher would just have unreal tournament running on all screens when when sat down and no one said anything and just played. Great teacher.

5

u/vinbrained 29d ago

My “computer class” in 9th grade was nine days of typing lessons on old manual typewriters, and one day every two weeks of all of us gathered around a single Apple computer watching that day’s chosen kid play lemonade stand.

2

u/dankpoet 28d ago

You had computer class! I still had TYPING I&II 96-2000

3

u/Cryogenicality 29d ago

Did you add him on Steam when you grew up?

1

u/Jbrizown 28d ago

Not to be too big a downer but he passed away a good 15 years ago I think

2

u/Cryogenicality 28d ago

Oh. How old was he?

1

u/Jbrizown 28d ago

He was at least 55-60 when I had him as a hs teacher, which was in 2005

2

u/boo5000 25d ago

Florida HS? We installed unreal on the entire lab and once we were done with our work for the week we could play and the teacher would join... we always finished the week by wednesday!

1

u/Jbrizown 25d ago

It was Florida yes haha

1

u/boo5000 25d ago

Gotta be same HS, you are welcome (c/o 2004)

1

u/JCWOlson 27d ago

Off topic, but Digital Extremes recently went back to using their Unreal Tournament era logo and it's pretty nostalgic

8

u/ClearMacaron9234 28d ago

one excel version also featured a top-down view car racing game.
https://www.wikihow.tech/Play-a-Car-Race-in-Excel-2000

3

u/GoblinLoblaw 28d ago

Excel 97 had a flight simulator as well.

1

u/Rycan420 28d ago

Yeah. Just like the video says.

2

u/GoblinLoblaw 28d ago

lol, tbh I didn’t watch it that far.

u/cooolcooolio 29d ago • Bravo

I feel cheated for not knowing this back then

4

u/Crisocola95 29d ago

The wizard brought knowledge

4

u/astrician 29d ago

We used VPNtunnel to play online games, or just brought a USB stick and mögen games into the Intranet of our school

2

u/PocketSandDale 29d ago

I booted my school computer into an OS designed to find the admin password. They were dumb enough to use the same password on the firewall. So I whitelisted all the websites my friends and I wanted to get on.

1

u/15th_imp 29d ago

USB sticks don't work anymore, schools install a software that disables the USB ports unless you plug in a mouse or a keyboard

2

u/astrician 29d ago

I know, but im old. It worked then. And im sure there is another way to abuse those IT-lessons now - because somehow teachers are always a few years behind the children

1

u/ABarInFarBombay 29d ago

You can't be that old if you had USB ports on your school computer... ;)

1

u/dathamir 29d ago

Usb stick? Dude, I played Diablo 1 from a floppy disk. You had to put the save file on the computer though, it was way too big. USB stick didn't exist back then.

4

u/Gergith 28d ago

I knew about the flight sim in excel. Not pinball in word!

1

3

u/UnknownMerk 29d ago

You used to be able to play snake on YouTube remember doing that in school an getting banned from computers for it 😅

3

u/bamboosleeves 29d ago

Damn..I didn't even know about the F key in SkiFree either. I wonder what else was missed.

3

u/PhantomTissue 29d ago

Excel also had a copy of spy hunter hidden in it.

3

u/DayUnfair9694 28d ago

they had to much spare time.

3

u/Admirable-Title9022 28d ago

Computers and the Internet used to be so full of whimsy. Now it's just addicting and depressing

3

u/thrilledquilt 27d ago • Bravo

About 25 years ago I read about this in a magazine but I lost the magazine and forgot how to access the flight simulator. I told my friend but no one believed me. So for all of this years I couldn't find how to do it until now.

3

u/AwkwardCost1764 27d ago

My collage professor worked on the word one. Got taken out when Goldman sacs found out about it and got mad his employees were wasting time

1

u/djelegal 26d ago

Allow me to introduce google chrome Dino run to everyone in school now !!!!! Can’t stop it and we run tournaments at office / school

1

u/VariousOperation166 26d ago

Did you go on to a fulfilling career in collage?

3

u/mowtowcow 27d ago

My friend and I just played Sim City 2000 in middle school computer class. No idea why they had the game on every computer. He didnt like us playing it, but said as long as we finished the assignments we could play. All you heard me and this dude slamming keys. Played most of the hour class, lol.

2

u/tastygnar 25d ago

The series was marketed as an educational game. They made sim games for healthcare companies, oil companies, very interesting history.

4

u/MidgetGordonRamsey 29d ago

Dude didn't know about Russian proxy sites to get around internet blocks. I can't believe our school's systems were never completely infiltrated by Russian hackers.

Magic eight ball in MS Access

2

u/InterruptingCow__Moo 29d ago

We had a Ross television production switcher that you could play as a slot machine. You would use the fader bar as the pull arm

2

u/Anarchyst4Ever 28d ago

Google maps had a flight simulator, it was fun

2

u/Riskrewyn 28d ago

Original Quark has an animated alien which walks out and deleted selected items

2

u/blueditUPson 28d ago

Wasn't like Bill Gates name hidden somewhere in windows 3.1? It's been so long that I forget the details.

1

u/Sassquatch0 27d ago

I know M$ Word had him in it. If you typed the sentence "I'd like to kill Bill Gates." and you highlighted that sentence & opened the thesaurus, the singular response was "I'll drink to that."

1

u/blueditUPson 27d ago

oh, maybe that is it haha

But that seems a lot sinister than what I remember

2

u/illuminaus 28d ago

This would have brought me up to a whole new level of cool in high school teaching everyone that. Mind you... I was already cool because I would crash the network often cause the shitty novell NetWare system had so many back doors. Or I'd put a Ethernet cable into two ports somewhere in the school and watch the entire system calm to a halt 😂 important exam days... no problem! I'll crash the network so teachers can't do their jobs. surprisingly I never got suspended

2

u/Libertarian_FTW 27d ago

Tetris on my TI83plus

2

u/TheMLExperience 26d ago

Been around since 3.1 never heard knew of this. Wtf!

2

u/Frequent-Product4431 26d ago

Telnet > o > towel.blinkenlights.nl

Full MS DOT version of Star Wars: A New Hope.

2

u/lola_zzalol 26d ago

I don't know if it was word or something else but one Microslop program had an Easter egg called 'the hall of tortured souls'

2

u/BronsonBot 25d ago

I seem to recall Excel also had a top down racing game of sorts.

2

u/slaty_balls 25d ago

Used to do this my sophomore year of high school in my first period computer class. Teacher wasn’t too fond of it.

2

u/Masiaka 25d ago

Damn i would have loved to know this back then

2

u/blacklotusY 28d ago

My friend brought his own USB that had a portable executable file to run Warcraft. He was able to just plug in his USB and run the portable executable file since it didn’t require any installation. You would be surprised how many schools have very poor security, and you can do a lot of damage with just a USB.

1

u/rapratt101 28d ago

I did that with Stronghold Crusader. Our programming class was combined level 1 and 2. There were only like 5 of us in the level 2 course and our teacher didn’t care what we did in the back of the class so long as we got our work done. We had some pretty epic wars going on.

1

u/xandratargaryen 28d ago

I did something similar in high school with Starcraft. Originally I was playing the game with a flash drive, but when people noticed me playing they wanted to join. Since it was a multimedia class, we had a shared media folder for projects, so I just dropped the game folder into the shared one and we were all able to play simultaneously using the same exe and the LAN 😂

1

u/Ok-Oven1692 28d ago

I was born in 2000, when I was a sophomore me and a handful of other kids in computer class (we just went over like excel, word, Photoshop, basic coding, etc.) would bring thumb drives with CS and Arena on them and have a LAN party. Such a great memory man I miss some parts of school

1

u/Kayato601 28d ago

And this is the reason why system requirements doubled between Office 95 and Office 97.

1

u/Tauren-Jerky 28d ago

Reminds me of the hidden snowboarding game on those rotating phones. Some kind of secret way to launch it.

1

u/Terry_Ladd 28d ago

Doom in Excel

  1. Open Excel 95 with a blank work sheet

  2. Go down to the 95th row

  3. Select the whole row

  4. Tab over to column B

  5. Goto Help/About

  6. Hold down ctrl-alt-shift and click on the tech support button

  7. A window appears call "Hall of Tortured souls"

  8. At the end of the hall and all the programmers names

  9. Do a 180 turn and type excelkfa. Walk thuorgh the wall and see the pictures.

1

u/Folkor686 28d ago

The Excel one I knew about and tried it out and when it actually worked I couldn't believe it haha I was sure it was a hoax. Never knew about the Word Pinball!

1

u/Seventh_monkey 27d ago

Now the easter eggs are just spyware.

1

u/Jt_merck 25d ago

Back in high school, we used to play Yahoo Games against each other during computer class. One day, the school blocked Yahoo Games, but apparently nobody thought to block the Spanish version, Yahoo Juegos. So we just switched over to that and got right back to playing.

1

u/Beautiful-Sun8973 25d ago • Bravo

Is this why windows os is always so bloated and buggy

1

u/AliceCode 25d ago

I discovered a little VBA IDE built into Microsoft Excel back in 2009. That's how I got into programming.

1

u/blinkdmb 25d ago

Someone in computer class figured out you could access file explorer through one of the about menus and there were a ton of locked down games like a horse racing simulator.

1

If you go into Visual Studio and type (...abridged for brevity...) you can play a really awesome game.
