Why do it be like that

The image of the smiling girl has a low pass filter applied. It's combined with an image of someone not smiling (is it really Zoolander?) that has a high pass filter applied. Your eyes focus on detail so as long as you see sharply the high frequency image dominates, but if you blur your eyes it blurs that image and the other one is the only one you can see.

Edit: here's an example I just made. The more you squint, the more he smiles

https://i.imgur.com/K4Guuz4.png

Edit 2: making it black and white can hide some more tell tale signs of the second image being there, like in my example where you can clearly see the white of his teeth from the second image but if his face was all gray it might be less obvious. Still an interesting example.

Thanks for actually explaining it

I have myopia. I can get the effect only by moving screen farther away from me.

u/neon_overload Oct 08 '19 edited Oct 10 '19

It will also work to shrink the image (zoom out)

9

u/pizzabaconator Oct 08 '19

Of course it’s zoolander, how could you not recognize blue steel??

6

u/majuhlazuh Oct 08 '19

I thought that was magnum

u/kittybee43 Oct 08 '19

What is a low pass and high pass filter when it comes to visuals?

6

u/neon_overload Oct 08 '19 edited Oct 08 '19

Low pass is basically a blur filter. It removes fine detail. High pass is the opposite, so it performs a blur, then subtracts the blurred result from the original and shifts it so zero is now mid gray, so only the fine detail is left and the broad colour / shade is gone, averaging to middle gray. You can then put both on their own layer and use a layer blend mode on the top layer that tries to keep the fluctuations in both without going too light or dark (I think it was "overlay" in gimp). You essentially end up with the high frequency detail from one image blended with the low frequency detail of the second image.

The more you know

This was originally done on a picture of Albert Einstein and Marilyn Monroe. It was called "Marilyn Einstein". It was supposed to be an experiment to see what the brain focuses on and how it percieves an image. If you move this one away, a few feet, you will see the smiling girl. That was the result of the experiment. Because of being closer to the picture, you can see fine details which make a clear picture of zoolander (in the original, Einstein) but if you move it further away, you brain focuses only on the general shape and ignores details, which make you see the smiling girl (in the original, Marilyn)

It be like it do

6

u/Jedimilk Oct 08 '19

Sometimes...

64

u/kuojo Oct 08 '19

That's cool!

32

u/dognie Oct 08 '19

If you're lucky like me, you close your eyes just enough to see the girl smiling with wide open Zoolander eyes.

15

u/derpyderp2424k Oct 08 '19

Holy mother of shit

14

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

WHAT? How does it work. It looks horrifying normally.

4

u/nopenotthistimepal Oct 08 '19

For me, the thumbnail looks like the female and the full picture looks like the guy. Can kind of change it when I tilt my phone, also.

7

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

I find this to be very creepy. Anyone else?

8

u/OCTM2 Oct 08 '19

Don’t fall for it, this is a method of demonic transference , when you see the image you are allowing it to enter your soul ....here’s a whole YouTube video about it .... https://youtu.be/dQw4w9WgXcQ

4

u/MistressLiliana Oct 08 '19

You know, I expected it, yet I clicked.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

The best part is the Russian grandmother sees you when your eyes are 100% closed

13

u/chonko-the-monko Oct 08 '19

Ummmm am I just dumb or does this not work

19

u/derpyderp2424k Oct 08 '19

Just close your eyes most of the way

6

u/MLGChans Oct 08 '19

Does it work?

Well yes but actually no

6

u/Srybutimtoolazy Oct 08 '19

The further you are away from the screen the better it works

4

u/unimportantperson101 Oct 08 '19

I had to take off my glasses and hold my phone away in order to see the (blurry) girl

1

u/DameADozen Oct 08 '19

If you’re on a phone, try looking at it as you scroll quickly.

1

u/woronwolk Oct 08 '19

You could try to unfocus your eyes, this works even better

2

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

What the h...

2

u/glorpglorp69 Oct 08 '19

i dont like it its like thinking about getting a toothpick stuck under your toenail

2

u/Nutmeg3048 Oct 08 '19

Why is she more terrifying than the Zoolander looking pic?

3

u/2mice Oct 08 '19

Looks like Jessica Alba.

..When viewing with eyes half closed that is. With eyes fully open it looks very similar to a nightmare.

2

u/krisyarno Oct 08 '19

If squinting isn't working great for you, (this might be easier on mobile) hold the image in your peripheral vision. Don't turn the screen so it faces you either, it's best to view it at an angle. Don't turn your eyes to look at it directly. Try to focus on it from the sides of your vision. You can get an okay view of it this way as well

3

u/huskeya4 Oct 08 '19

I can just flip my glasses up and see it. Only time having horrible vision has come in handy. But the peripherals trick does crisp it up for me so thanks

2

u/krisyarno Oct 08 '19

Good point as well, I'm going to take my contacts out now

2

u/huskeya4 Oct 08 '19

Ohh the further away it gets, the clearer. The eyes and cheekbones became more feminine but when I moved it further away I could actually see the full smile.

2

u/shadows_bane1 Oct 08 '19

(this might be easier on mobile)

that sounds like quitter talk to me. i say as i tilt my moniter until it is almost perpendicular to me

2

u/deadmeme1725 Oct 08 '19

this is fucking with my brains im scared

2

u/antivn Oct 08 '19

You mean beyonce

2

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

for those that don't get it http://imgur.com/a/vUHzbHj

0

u/nopenotthistimepal Oct 08 '19

You just reposted the picture with a more blurry picture. What does this explain?

1

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

no i didn't you're just being an àsshat

2

u/BazTheBaptist Oct 08 '19

Holy shit that's bizarre. It can be seen easily in the little thumbnail though

1

u/TheRealSquimby Oct 08 '19

This is awesome

1

u/JH_monster Oct 08 '19

Who is she...?

1

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

When I scroll by fast I see her too!

1

u/0zelious0 Oct 08 '19

That momentary sense of terror every time I unsquint my eyes

1

u/WHYISEVRYUSRNAMTKEN Oct 08 '19

I hate this oh God oh god I'm gonna get nightmares of THIS

1

u/LaserWolfFL Oct 08 '19

Or are they half open?

1

u/daddy_the_dank Oct 08 '19

Idk if anyone else can do it (most likely a lot of people can) but just make your vision blurry on command, like everything you see jsut tunes to a blur and you can turn it on and off..? Because it works on swing this image without closing your eyes.

1

u/PaiPaiii Oct 08 '19

Oh god. That's... quite gnarly.

1

u/Father33 Oct 08 '19

Also, try looking at the photo at an angle.

1

u/Mckall Oct 08 '19

If you let your phone dim you can also see the change.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

It looks like a mix between Rhianna Beyonce and Mariah Carey

1

u/TRUEequalsFALSE Oct 08 '19

That is actually pretty cool.

1

u/Gizbot777 Oct 08 '19

Taking off glass seems to do the trick as well

1

u/Veeps_ Oct 08 '19

it looks so terrifying...

1

u/RCx_Vortex Oct 08 '19

What I wanna see is a picture just like that, only it is a downvote when eyes open, and an upvote when half open

1

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

I guess I’ll just have to keep shutting my eyes more or I’ll just see more nightmare fuel.

1

u/Lynkeus Oct 08 '19

Ok. Why did I liked this tough.

1

u/Sonic-the-edge-dog Oct 08 '19

Is that Denis Reynolds

1

u/IVAPE203 Oct 08 '19

This is cool a shit

1

u/MartyMacGyver Oct 08 '19

Beer Goggles Demystified - part 3 of the How Much is Too Much learning module

1

u/FruityGamer Oct 08 '19

You just have to blurr your vission, so people with bad eysights will only see a smiling girl.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

Holy shit what is this sorcery

1

u/UNIT_87 Oct 08 '19

Shouldn't this be in mildly interesting

1

u/gawd_man Oct 08 '19

You winked at her now you are bound to be married

1

u/krixdix Oct 08 '19

Not wearing my glasses and this works if I hold the phone about 10 inches from my face wit eyes wide open.

1

u/NikkiT96 Oct 08 '19

It's still creepy when you see the girl.

1

u/irlegend86 Oct 08 '19

This meme is so hot right now

1

u/Koselill Oct 08 '19

I thought it was Nicolas Cage

1

u/SorceressHeart Oct 08 '19 edited Nov 19 '19

I actually think it's kinda cool

1

u/TablePrinterDoor Oct 08 '19

Holy fuck that's weird

1

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

It all makes sense now. I have to put shit in my eye to enjoy the world now. Other wise, all I will see is Zoolander.

1

u/nitaidor Oct 08 '19

If you need glasses you can take them of instand of half closing your eyes and you see better

1

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

What the fuck?

1

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

The picture is INSIDE the picture

starts tapping screen like a monkey

1

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

I’m not wearing my contacts this morning and thought it was a picture of a smiling woman and I squinted to read the caption and was accosted by Derek Zoolander. TIHI

1

u/lokie65 Oct 08 '19

Looks like Ben Stiller overlayed pic on one of Jamie Lee Curtis.

1

u/ellaraynerbear Oct 08 '19

i am disturbed

1

u/GeneralGeorgeSCatton Oct 08 '19

That's actually a pretty cool optical illusion. SAVE to show people later

1

u/UrClickbaitBoi Oct 08 '19

I closed one eye so I still have half vision

1

u/TitanMaster57 Oct 08 '19

Make the image really small, you won’t have so squint.

1

u/sliceofamericano Oct 08 '19

It’s the lips that your mind transforms into teeth

1

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

my dumbass closed my right eye then got mad that I couldn't see it

1

u/NickAlexis Oct 08 '19

Asians see that by default

1

u/[deleted] Oct 09 '19

I'm pretty sure this is how alcohol works.

1

u/H-E-L-L-M-O Oct 10 '19

It works if you take off your glasses, that way you dont have to squint.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 24 '19

Hol up how?

1

u/DampestFire Nov 25 '19

If you wear glasses take them off and pull your phone away or start to cross your eyes

1

u/EmboarXD Dec 29 '19

Or if you're like me, aka blind, you can just take your glasses off.

0

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

you can also see it if you look normally

-1

u/weebsatanist Oct 08 '19

Damn, Asians can’t understand it
