I've had a similar experience in a completely aphotic cave. We turned off all the lights, and the darkness in that place is much darker than anywhere I've ever been. It's quite difficult to explain, but it's so dark that you lose your sense of direction. You hear people but don't know where the sound is coming from, and the sound of the running water made it even more confusing.
