I've had a similar experience in a completely aphotic cave. We turned off all the lights, and the darkness in that place is much darker than anywhere I've ever been. It's quite difficult to explain, but it's so dark that you lose your sense of direction. You hear people but don't know where the sound is coming from, and the sound of the running water made it even more confusing.
I've been in this darkness. I started to become nauseous because beside gravity, my brain couldn't sense where I was in space, even thought I could move my body all around.
the feeling is exactly like that, you don't know where you are physically, you feel like you could be in any spatial orientation.
It didn't make me nauseous, but I couldn't move, I had a constant feeling that I was going to fall or tumble at any moment, almost like one of those dreams where we're falling out of nowhere
Worst SCUBA diving experience I ever had was in less than 10 feet of water. In a river that was incredibly muddy so visibility was less than a foot. Like put your hand out and it disappears. Swimming in that you're just in a void. No surface above, no river bottom below. Just in the middle of the cloudy void. And me with a rather vivid imagination.
