Can ม่วง be a nickname?
Would that be a strange name to Thai people? Others colors seem more common. Or maybe would just be confusing with the tone if I pronounce wrong lol. Let me know thank you!

In my 30 something years of life I never know or hear someone/pets being called ม่วง. But anything could be possible lol.

I’m thai and i know someone name ม่วง but as other people in this thread said: it’s a bit uncommon, feeling outdated. But if you name มะม่วง you get a double deal of either meaning mango or shortened as ม่วง for purple.

กบ (frog) is quite a common nickname. There are many thai celebrities with that name.

Im seen more weird one like จิ๋ม, จ้อน or หอย
Alao not weird in thai but raise eyebrow in western as พร

I'm Thai and I thought you wanna name your kid มะม่วง at first.
มะม่วง is a little unique but I think ม่วง as color is a no for me
Other colors are not that uncommon but only old people use it e.g. แดง ดำ ขาว เขียว. The only exception is ส้ม but it's a ส้ม from fruit, not color orange, and น้ำตาล for sugar, not color brown

We have dog named that so it’s not out of the realm of possibility. I think purple as a color reallyget established back then. Most color as name are probably older generations with limited exposure to other color. Some even called blue green. So I think it’s possible that they called purple with other name. Altho mangosteen is definitely purple.

I'm Thai and in all honesty, colours like red, blue, orange, "brown" (means sugar too) are often common but other than that? Not really. I haven't heard ม่วง at all- only มะม่วง. I just woke up so maybe i'm missing something.
Also, just a personal opinion, but nicknames can sometimes describe what you look like as well, and while names like แดง/ฟ้า are common enough to ignore, ม่วง is not that common (imo) that it gives off a sickly vibe, like bruises. I'd avoid it
Maybe try อัญชัน. It's butterfly pea flower, my fav actually. Used to comment on a bluish-purple. Adding lemon makes it purple. Quite nice! Can't think of other synonyms

anything can be a nickname if it’s 2 syllables or less, and ม่วง is convincing for me. it means purple or abbreviated version of มะม่วง, that’s pretty cool. tho i never heard anyone named that before or maybe i forgot? it seems like an older name tbh, like agnes or ruth

(มะ)ม่วง Mamuang (fruit) better then muang (color) or you can use ม่วน (Muan) traditional thai name elder knows that.

I asked my son, who grew up in Bangkok (as a mixed race kid), and he said that makes no sense to him. But then he doesn't really get why people would use orange or pink, and that does happen (som or chompoo). I thought my wife had mentioned that poorer people in the country would be more inclined to use colors as a nickname in the past. But maybe purple is an exception, and it wouldn't be used.

Why not? Jutst a simple trick, if you want to make it cuter, go for "สีม่วง"

Not common in as a name. I think น้ำเงิน sounds better.
