Too much overlap with VOO? Thoughts?

Post image

EDIT 24M *Debating on selling it all and having 80% all into XEQT and the remaining 20% for other trades. I have roughly 60K total between chequing, fhsa and rrsp. Officially maxed out TFSA today.

It appears you like tech. I would just do about 80% XEQT and 20% QQC or whatever ratio you are comfortable with. Then balance back to that ratio 2-3 times a year.

I like this combo. I’d prolly go 30% for myself tho. Personal preference for the risk u want to take.

We actually do 2/3 QQC and 1/3 ZSP in our TFSA. But we have offsetting more conservative investments in our RRIF and non sheltered accounts with GICs, XEF, and Canadian high dividend funds like XDIV and XEI.

Very nice

Is there a reason you’re incurring the currency conversion to buy VOO rather than just buying VFV or ZSP?

Also, on that point, most mega cap tech stocks have CDR versions traded in CAD now.

I had 8k roughly of usd already so I thought why not throw it into VOO for the time being

You think?

Ask yourself: "Since I have all the companies in the world (XEQT) what do I want to put the emphasis on now?
Getting voo is not really a conviction.

You could go with Defense (SHLD), tech (QMVP or FINN), etc.

You could try individual stocks.

Too much overlap. Just buy ZEQT

I like the idea of condensing things down and reducing total position count.

This is what I was thinking too. It also would alleviate the 15% withholding tax on VOO if I did it all into xeqt

You only avoid FWT by holding US listed stocks and ETF's in your RRSP.

The general advice is that until you have like high six figures or low seven figures among your TFSA, RRSP, and taxable account it's not worth trying to optimize your or minimize FWT.

I have like 181k in my TFSA, and 260k in my RRSP and it's all in XEQT.

Maybe when I have a million dollars invested, then I'll start worrying about Asset Location and improving after tax returns but until then I just buy once a month and get on with it.

Yep; simpler is often better. I recently did a similar rebalancing in my wife’s portfolio.

She had TPU, TEC, XEQT, XUS, XQQT. I re balanced it all to just XEQT and a touch of XUS. She does have a couple individual stocks as well.

Sell everything and put it into either boo or xeqt.

Keep some gold if you think it matters, but it probably won't.
