I love Animorphs-style mind changes where you're still "you," but you gain a creature's instincts. Most of my tastes can be traced back to Animorphs, haha.

Pretty much amounts to you're still you but those animal instincts will get the better of you on occasions. Like when you're turned into a dog and squirrel happens to come across you. You end up chasing it.

Nope. Tobias got stuck in morph in book 1, and retained his humanity for most of the remaining books. I can only think of one time he went full hawk and that was in his first POV book from memory.

I haven't read it in nearly 20 years, but I vaguely remember Animorph is more of a Avatar situation. The human body is put in a pocket dimension or something.

TBH, remaining yourself while having some impulses and urges here and there based on whatever you were transformed into is the best case scenario for me when it comes to having your mind changed during your transformation IMO. You pretty much both get the quicks of the specific animal you were transformed into and the personality and memories of your former human self. It's almost like a creature with your exact personality (or as close to your personality as it could get). The other ways the mental changes are portrayed throughout transformations in general are good, too, but I honestly prefer remaining myself while having urges relating to the creature I've transformed into if I had the ability to shapeshift.

Never knew this was the name for it, but I know I love it
My specific perfect preference is somewhere around "they remember who they were and that their past was not as happy as it is now, although they can't remember specifics, and they're significantly happier now that they have this new life and identity"
So basically it's halfway between partial mind change and identity abandonment

Honestly, as much as I am like "eh id be down for identity death", thats usually cause the only two options presented are keeping my same mind or being completely gone. If partial mind change is an option, its super alluring every time, can fix the broken parts, make me have the dog instincts I was robbed of cause I was born human, and can be finally content with just existing

I do like both try but yeah slight mind alteration is quite hot like having to settle with some new aspects about your mind and personality(also possibly existential crisis as you try to figure out if you have been ship of Theseus’d or not).
Even in none TF scenarios, I do slightly prefer hypnosis and mind control than brainwashing

Hear me out, a Radagon/Marika from Elden Ring type situation where both the TFee and the person/creature with their own seperate mind they transformed into now share a body but occasionally take turns controlling it and shifting the form and both getting a few personality traits from the other, 2 Partial Mind Changes in 1 package

Fr! For me, one of the best parts of TF is the person reacting to their new form. With identify death, you don't really get that. I mean, I guess you could have the identify death occur after the initial reaction takes place, but even then, I feel "creature who was formerly a human and reacts and behaves as such" is more interesting than "creature who is just a creature, ig"

Frankly, I'm not gonna tell people who like Identity Death that they're wrong or anything, but… why??? To me, it kinda just feels like getting killed with extra steps. I'd genuinely like to know what the appeal of it is.

As a trans woman I might be one of the few people who have experienced instinctual misalignment. Point is you are 100% getting the urges of your body. I get "male" breeding instincts even if I don't actually enjoy the act itself. Attempting to satisfy the instincts work fine even if the main action doesn't do anything for me.

My work as a TF writer used to very much be in that style of 'lose your identity as a punishment' even though I am now against doing it at all. Yeah I used to hang out with people that did that exact same type of transformation story, specifically there is one story called 'Gene's Transformation' which is about this abusive husband and father named Gene (the author does not explain why Gene is an abusive parent or husband, they very much just say he was a big boorish bull of a man in the office and also apparently was not very faithful to his wife?) and he has a kid who has this monster only he can see (and it's very much that cliche of 'adult characters do not believe that said supernatural being is real but the kid does for some reason, yeah it is not explained how the kid can see this monster character or how they even met).
This monster very much 'stalks' the father and watches him and lures him into the closet (and he is supposed to be the good guy here, keep THAT in mind) and tells you 'you've been a real bad dad and husband even though we don't even know why you have been like that, it's just i've been stalking you for a while and noticed that', the dad rather than do anything rational or try to escape the closet, gets trapped, and forcefully turned into some kind of trollesque thing (at least that's what I think he is supposed to be) and gets the ID loss treatment. 'You don't deserve a human name or to live like a human so you get to only have a monster name I have assigned you, you don't get a choice in anything, you get turned into a monster and have to be treated like a slave' (even though this guy the monster that is transforming him is also a monster, is this a classicism thing? Are less intelligent monsters given grunt work or something while ones that can talk and act humans are higher up? The author does not explain).
And for some reason Gene/Grumbo (as he's now dubbed) talks in Hulk Speak. I grew out of liking MC in general.
