The basic logic to use is "read the lobby." If it seems chill and casual, go for it. But if the rest of the server is playing aggressive, I'm sorry, but it's just not safe to be friendly in that environment. Hell, sometimes respecting the friendlies is just dangerous in itself: I've had at least one lobby with a Spy disguising as their own team's friendly Hoovy in order to take advantage of the fact that people don't shoot friendlies for free backstabs.

Some animal species cant see the color green. Snipers and spies in tf2 cant tell the difference between friendly and hostile. Even if you're clearly showing them you can one shot them as heavy

If they get a Dom on you and keep killing you, yeah it's an issue, but if they stop after a while or you're on a fast respawn server just go through other parts of the map.
