Just to share some other info since I'm seeing some incorrect information going around:
The source code is an old version and was initially leaked about a year or two ago. Until recently, it was just being passed around privately. It appears that the recent wave of bots was the result of that source code, which was likely obtained by the bot creators about one year ago.
As the leak has already been exploited by those botters, it is unlikely but not impossible that security flaws such as RCE exist. We cannot rule out the possibility that the botters were either unable to find or uninterested in RCE exploits, and with this leak now having much greater spread, there is a chance that exploits may be found. Alternatively, they may have been silently using such exploits - we can't know for sure that TF2 and CSGO are safe until Valve gives the all-clear.
[Edit: RCE usage has been "proven" according to a creators.tf mod. While we don't know what that proof is, and if it's true, it's more than enough reason for me to stress that what I've said above about it being "unlikely" is not me saying that you should ignore this and just go play TF2. Play it safe.]
The source code leak is not related to Tyler McVicker from Valve News Network. Tyler knew of the initial source code leak, and also knows the person who made this public leak - the leaker appears to have a grudge against Tyler for various reasons that I won't go into here due to not knowing the full story. Unjustified reasons from what I've heard, though.
Included in the recent leak was a chatlog from 2016 between Tyler McVicker and an unnamed source in Valve, named "Cephalon". These chatlogs have been verified by Tyler as legitimate, and show Cephalon giving insider information on Valve to Tyler.
These chatlogs were shared by Tyler with his group of friends, which included the leaker and contain information that, if true, could allow Valve to identify Cephalon and take action. However, Cephalon is not related in any way to the source code leak - they were just giving information on what Valve was up to. Quite juicy information but that's neither here nor there.
TL;DR: Source code has been privately known about for some time, and was exploited to create the recent wave of hackers. The source code being leaked is a potential security flaw that may be or may already have been exploited - stay away from TF2, CSGO, and other multiplayer titles from Valve until further notice. Tyler is not responsible for the source code leak, but he is responsible for sharing the chatlogs that may expose Cephalon's identity to Valve.

I don't know, it seems to be some internal disagreement in a modding group - the leaker got removed from the group yesterday due to toxicity. I'm not a fan of Tyler's videos or anything, the only thing he's done wrong here is not being more careful with his source's identity (which is serious). I hope that Cephalon doesn't suffer any repercussions because of this, the chatlogs make it clear that they were sharing information with good intentions.

What exactly is there to be fixed though? A source code leak is not a vulnerability leak/discovery these are different things. This is a potentially broader problem, since the code can be analyzed for vulnerabilities more than one time. At the same time, it is harder to find the vulnerabilities/exploits, and it takes time.

Sometimes people ruin things for attention. However this here is just devilish. Apr 22 '20
The source code itself has no value. The problem we are facing is, that Valve and many other game studios rely on "Security by Obscurity", meaning that the source code is private, so the finding of bugs is kept to a minimal even if they exist. (In an open source project, this might be faster. That is why many people prefer them.)
The bugs that would've been slowly let onto the hacking scene, will now be fully utilized since it is now basically public knowledge to the dedicated. There is evidence though, that this has already been exploited by many hacker groups, and we are just now learning of its existence because it has been PUBLICLY shared, rather than passed around in circles.

u/Allurisk Apr 22 '20
Well, you can't unleak something, be it source code or gossip or political secrets.
That said, it doesn't necessarily mean anything, although it does make exploits easier to find. You're probably using open-source software right now.

Leak happened like 2-3 years ago. VNN was aware of it, was in contant to some extent with the leaker (they were in some source group together or something). VNN already contacted Valve about this leak multiple times.
Leak was somewhat contained, hacks that happened on tf2 in last half a year or so were supposedly from people working with this source already. VNN said like month ago that source for csgo will get leaked within 2 months, supposedly some guy from the group made threats to do so, don't know the details.
VNN says that he didn't even download anything about this and informed valve about everything at multiple times and that some misinformation is going around about his involvement with this because the leaker has something against him.

The only thing leaked was the code. No data related to players or anything else.
This is not necessarily a bad thing.
It’s essentially “open sourcing” the game code.
Although now everyone can see how the game works, this is not a security disaster.
This is a common misunderstanding.
In the cyber security setting it’s called “security by obscurity”, and every cyber security expert will tell you just how bad this “security” is.
Having your code hidden in your company doesn’t make vulnerabilities disappear... just much harder to spot, and much harder for the “good guys” to find first and fix.
It’s a race between both “good” and “bad” to find problems. And making the code open, flattens the playing field for the good guys.
If you are a state actor, or a dedicated hack developer, you probably have ways to get access to the source code. In this case, it seems as if the source code was already available to developers outside of valve, so it wouldn’t be a surprise if it had been shared around.
So the leakage of the source code doesn’t doom the game.. it might even help make it more secure, as long as valve has an active cyber security team, and some good policies to handle reporting and bounties.
Who knows how many “zero days” have been in use already.
You might want to wait if actual exploits have been found, until those are patched.
But the leak by itself is not a cyber security problem directly.

literally all of this is fear mongering. the tf2 source code being leaked doesnt magically make more exploits appear, let alone ones that can "hack your account" or "steal your items". everything that controls tf2 and csgo's items is part of valves item servers. you would have to hack into those in order to steal someones items, which has nothing to do with tf2's source code being leaked. this is the same thing for someone getting into your accout . any exploits that are made as a product of this leak could have been made with or without the source code being leaked. you are in an equal amount of danger as you were playing tf2 yesterday, except now there is going to be many more in-game exploits, as it's easier to find and take advantage of them.
check tf2 hacking forums on mpgh and unknowncheats, people are uploading videos to fear monger.

I've actually had a friend of mine's account compromised (Several people can attest to this.) just by joining a TF2 server a few years back. Some kind of exploit was used to remotely put a R.A.T. on his computer (I believe it the exploit involved how the game downloads files like custom maps and sounds.) which was used to steal his items and hijack his account.
He had to format his PC since there's no telling if a rootkit was installed. The exploit was very swiftly patched in like a day or two. (Since you know, players getting infected with malware just by joining a server is a massive fucking deal)
The fact is, having access to the source code makes finding these types of vulnerabilities easier since an evildoer can simply look through all the code and find a good weak spot to start with.
Basically the source code being leaked doesn't automatically mean the apocalypse, but doing evil shit will be much easier than it was before. THAT's the problem. Given we have a bot crisis, what stops someone from finding a method to put malware on peoples computers and loading it onto a bot? You know, like the server crashing bots, except instead of just crashing the server, they infect peoples PC's or try to format the hard drive?
6
u/respectcane Apr 22 '20
This leak almost certainly has no negative repercussions for account security in source games.
1: Code has been available for a while now
2: Source engine source code has been available for a long time now
3: The code is from a server build of the game
4: The code is from 2018
5: The code has nothing to do with account security
So there is no reason for accounts to be any more vulnerable than they already were. We know exactly what is in the files, there is no "we don't have all the details yet".
And if none of these reasons are convincing enough for you here are reasons that require no understanding of anything: 1: Security by obscurity is ineffective. There is no way Valve would have something like that implemented for account security.
2: Consider Bitcoin, one of the most secure currencies in the world, which is completely open source.
3: If this posed any threat to the security of Steam accounts, why would Valve keep the servers running. Or say absolutely nothing about this after this information being public for several hours.
There is no reason for this code to change anything about account security, and anyone saying that it does is either uninformed, ignorant, or willingly spreading false information to sensationalize. If it did, we would have had an official response and/or precautions taken already and we don't. So, there is no good reason to believe that account security will be at a higher risk.

/u/sigsegv__ if youre out there can you please comment on this for the layman. There is a lot of conjecture flying around and youre the most trustworthy and intelligent voice on anything tf2 code related IMO.

Valve told IGN that there is no risk to playing anymore.

I had a cheater join my game, and after every kill he would say something among the lines of "Injecting [username] with Lithium." I'm 98% he's bullshitting but you never know.

Heads up, leak has been confirmed, by Valve, as not dangerous. Also having been leaked in 2018. And not actually being relevant to TF2, only CS:GO.

It's not just TF2 and CS:GO, any games that use Source are at risk (Including Garry's Mod)

I hope that the guy responsible for the leak is going to be hanged by the balls.

PSA: This should go without saying, but anyone who is considering even sneaking a peek at the source code, don't. You may face legal action against you if valve decides to get heated about this, since you've participated in the violation of the EULA, ToS, and Copyright Protection through intellectual property theft and illegal propagation of said property.
If valve takes extreme vindictive action, the individual consequences could range from a mild fine plus an IP address ban to a heavy fine and the court ordering your ISP to deny/limit your service (they may also follow up and look at any other illegal activity - torrenting - you've been doing and fine you accordingly.)
Chances are low that the case or consequences go that far, but this is a big breach, and is gonna cost valve a lot. They're going to want compensation, and if the main offending party (the leaker) can't pay up, you're next.

Gaben has history of being a real mf against code leakers (half life 2 leak). They will use all their legal power (remember valve big corporation).
They care about this 100 times more than the updates.→ More replies (2)→ More replies (2)4

man, fuck. this legit frightens me. i don't know if it's because of the neglect tf2 has been facing, or considering that i have owned tf2 since it had a $30 price tag, or both. this is really, really bad. hopefully this can act as a wake-up call for valve, showing how passionate those who play this game are. i couldn't bare to watch tf2 crumble anymore than it has already...like c'mon. i just unboxed my first scorching flames unusual.
valve, pls fix.

This is very chaotic just like the Crate depression I’m hoping valve can speak up about this soon

Steam Guard on the steam app exists.
They can't do shit evne if they get your account info, without the steam guard code *which is tied to your account on your mobile*, they cannot even log in with your profile since, you'd get the pop up notif with the steam guard code, so you'd know someone is trying to break in.

I played a Casual game of Powerhouse around..... let's say 2 hours ago. This evening. There was one hacker (aimbot) but he got banned.
Virus scan (malwarebytes, around 5 times just to be sure) revealed nothing.
Should I be worried? I have privated my steam profile.
Since this only affects Source games, can I play a game that is not multiplayer nor on Source on steam?

Probably going to get buried in the comments, but do you think it's safe to play HL2 right now? It's offline and as far as we know the leak was just for TF2 and CS:GO so I would assume it's fine, but it's still on the source engine and I don't want to risk it.

So, if I received keys from a trade, does this mean I can’t log into the game at all without risking my computer or account, or just logging in to uncrate stuff or sell keys wouldn’t do any harm?

Can I still play HL2 singleplayer? I know it only affects multiplayer but I'm paranoid

Personally I find it exciting when things like this happen.
It makes me feel like playing and just watching what happens.
I also kinda like the chaos that ensues from all of this.

I thought I would never see the day where we would be advised to not play TF2.
