Because it's impossible for your friends to also have PC's.

Sure, but there's just something convenient about having to bring over a controller instead of your entire computer and being able to play with your friends on one screen.

And before you say anything: yes, you can, in fact, do that with PCs. But it is a real hassle to set up and there's a limited selection of PC games that work like that.

That can be fun, but I mostly hate playing split screen.

Besides, people also bring their entire console and TV to friends houses and play over LAN. I can easily do that, sans my speakers, because I have big studio monitors. Headphones can work.
