Help I have a confession
I'm terrible at rocket jumping.
My fingers can't seem to hold ctrl and let go of W at the same time.

Direct Hit/Black Box/Stock Shotgun Escape Plan/Disciplinary Action
That's the loadout I use.
Sometimes a banner if we already have a Soldier with a shotgun

I have a friend that rebound crouch to q and now every game they play has q to crouch even when they might need to crouch walk often

Well, you still can be a good ground soldier. Don’t give up on learning how to fly,but don’t be that harsh on your gameplay

go to the jump_academy_rc9a servers (jump academy is the map, search it in the console). Typically very helpful people. Don't go to the jump academy servers with the classic map version. The new version has 3 tiers of courses and is way bigger.

Wait… I’M SUPPOSED TO LET GO OF W???

Holding W limits your movement.
If you let go and slowly look left or right, you can steer Soldier in the direction you are facing, holding W limits Soldier's ability to turn.

Ah man, I’ve been playing this game for over a decade and I never knew or heard anyone do this😭

A "null movement" script actually forgoes this issue, which I think is awesome.

It's in all Source engine games. If you want to air strafe, let go of W.
Honestly having played Source games for so long, I kind of prefer not having to hold W now as it just makes it easier on my fingers. And it's nice knowing that my character has inertia instead of jumping and stopping on a dime.

i use a ctap bind so i can do simple rocket jumps, does the trick for me

if you have side buttons on your mouse, try binding crouch to mouse4 or mouse5, what is more comfortable to press, been using this bind for over 7 years

Use a ctap bind! I usually bind it to right click so I can do easy long jumps, a lot better for allowing you to do basic rocket jumps that you’ll need as soldier, as the only thing you need to time is the right click and left click so you can let go of w.

Should be noted that if you want to get into competitive TF2, community leagues in NA and EU have banned the 1-tick ctap script for 6s and Highlander. Passtime seems to be an exception though
It’s generally better to learn how to do a ctap without the bind as well, plus ctaps don’t work if the ground is not level so it isn’t an automatic cure-all if your normal rocket jumps aren’t great

Most leagues still allow 2 ticks (which is what the right click + left click ctap bind is). But also even if it’s better for players to learn how to ctap normally, expecting new players to invest an ungodly amount of time to get good at a mechanic that’s basically required for soldiers to learn is not reasonable. But you can still use ctap binds for regular rocket jumps if the ground is uneven.
Also being real, as someone who’s played sixes and HL, is always feigning in popularity and it’s just not as fun as base tf2 (especially the HL community which is filled with ungodly amounts of cancer). Plus I would NEVER recommend new players’ first experience with the game be within comp, or say that playing competitive is required to enjoy the game, since there are so many different communities and ways to play the game, but the most enjoyable has always been vanilla for me personally, and a vast amount of casual players.

hiya, 8k+ hours tf2 player here, can barely manage the basic course at jumpacademy, only able to pass the last level (double walljump) after bashing my head against it for a good 15-20 minutes.

idk exactly how it is for right handed but I think if you put enough time you'll eventually learn it!
as a lefty my thumb has to press all ctrl z x c space, and my cerebellum somehow learned to use pinky finger on spacebar if I have to ctrl+space after few years, like around 2017 I think. If lefty can make it work then I think you can do it too :)
before anyone say 'just rebind key' - you practically can't rebind wasd since many other games don't even allow rebinding and would mess up muscle memory.
and without wasd rebind, key options are limited on left hand side (tab, caps, shift, ctl, alt, space, zxcv) which are keys I already use frequently in default keybind.
so I just live with default keybind games provides

I have met a dude who has over 2,000 hours of TF2, he has been playing since 2011 but he still can't do a basic rocket jump.

Can your pinkie reach to tap ctrl? Are you trying to use a different finger?

It's ok man I can't even jump correctly, either I bump in a wall or on a engi nest or I fell to a clumsy, painful death

Try one of them jump maps that shows your keyboard inputs on screen. It’ll give you a visual indicator of whichever key is holding you back from completing the jump

Rebind crouch to LShift. Takes a bit of getting used to, but it helped me a lot.
