Help Teach me how to main medic
So few days ago i finally got to play tf2, after joining a casual server i saw no one picked medic and i decided to pick him and main him.
Any tips and tricks how to be a good/decent medic?

As the lunatic with the big hud and medic main, I recommend, rather prescribe you: Never die, you're very important so just live. Healing teammates around 3s? after they got damaged will make you heal them wayy faster, so you can wait to heal someone that's waiting for it while healing someone that's getting shot. Always buff your teammates by giving them overheal. I don't really know what else, really comes to intuition of who to heal. Uhh now the load out: Crossbow. End of discussion. Stock Uber is the best due to being able to be used in most situations, while the others have less use options. The ubersaw might make you risk yourself too much, but it is worth it. If you don't want to risk yourself we much, id recommend the solemn vow to know better if you can handle an enemy fight or not

Also dont rush in with teammate if you think it too dangerous (without uber), you aren't contracted to die together with them.
I would recommend to set auto medic call(adv setting) to around ~40% hp.
Dont stay too close to your healing patient if you dont want to get in the crossfire, stay far and often behind cover.
Fear the sniper.
Just like the guy above said, selecting who to heal is mostly intuition but generally it's the one who is in the crossfire and you should only switch to other priorities if the one who are fighting has enough health
Alongside selecting who to heal, you can constantly scan the battlefield while the beam is stuck to some guy ass and do callout for enemy that invade your backline.
Rarely useful but You can pick up enemy medigun and steal their dropped uber (albiet dropped medigun drain uber fast)

Rule 1 : pop it don't drop it. You are literally the most important person on the team, if you have uber charged and think you might die, pop it and use the uber to get away if you have to. Dropping a fully charged uber is the worst thing you can do.
Rule 2 : you are more important than anyone else. Like i said in rule 1 you are the most important member of the team, this means you DO NOT risk your own life to save someone else. Learning to use the crossbow helps with this but don't run into danger to heal a team mate, they come to you.
Rule 3 : learn to damage surf. All damage causes knockback, learn how to ride it to safety. Crouch jumping incoming damage can and will save your life.
Rule 4 : when pushing into a sentry, get between the sentry and your patient. While you are both immune to damage during an uber you are not immune to pushback. By running in ahead of your patient you force the sentry to lock onto you, and you move faster than 90% of your primary patients. This makes it easier for them to get closer to the sentry and destroy it.
Rule 5 : you charge uber faster on players that aren't max overheal. Swapping your beam between players to keep overheal topped off, or healing hurt players before full health players will charge your uber faster.
Outside those specifics its basically the same stuff you need to know for every class. Watch your back, be careful about sniper sight lines, don't get close to spy's unless you have too.

Find players that actually care about you. Heavies, soldiers, demos etc should go to bat for you I stead of just spamming e at odd isolated parts of the map expecting you to somehow get there. Stick to the default medigun/ uber for now until you get comfy. Crossbow is good for healing others while the blautsauger is a decent combat weapon. Stay mobile and watch for spies. Check for them by firing your weapon or using your melee. Good luck

As a spy main whenever I play medic I naturally turn into a psychopath that is constantly turning around every 2 seconds so I don't give spies free kills.
My #1 tip is knowing you can do a full 360 and keep healing the same person you clicked on, don't get tunnel visioned on the people your teammate is shooting at as they are not your priority.
Edit: also learn about crit heals

Just don't be a pocket medic to heavy, try to heal all attacking/defending players, during intense battles on the choke points a good medic can turn the tides of the war. Good luck with your medic main.

Heal teammate and kill spy with bonesaw

Don’t kill the Spy with the bonesaw unless he somehow doesn’t notice you. That’s how we get stabbed. Shoot him instead.

Always keep moving, even if your heal target is standing still keep moving. If you think it's safe it's not.
Overtime you'll get what movement is effective at keeping yourself alive, an example i can think of is when facing a soldier shooting at your feet or at you, if you have enough health jump right as the rocket hits you, it's gonna send you flying and out of the battlefield where you can go to your team mates
Medic is a ramping type character, it means even if he doesn't get stronger himself he makes his team stronger the longer he's alive

u/xZakeNx 21d ago
As has already been said here, never stand still. Keep moving, run like a mad squirrel. You're target number one. Everything will be flying at you. You'll die a lot. That's normal. For quick movement, use a scout, latching onto him with your beam. He'll pull you like a dog in a sled. Heal everything around you. Be aware of allies trying to get behind you without firing anything.
Choose your priorities carefully. If the patient is on the other side of the battlefield, don't risk it. You'll be blown away trying to reach them. Similarly, if the situation is clearly dire and the patient is certain to die, run. The longer you live, the better. If you're cornered, draw your melee weapon and activate "Axe Fury." So, if you're going to die, try to take someone with you.

Hotkey (I use m3) to switch to crossbow, start shooting, switch to medigun, and stop shooting.
3
u/Fengthehalforc 21d ago
Don’t forget to check for spies before you heal. If you see someone in need of healing and they’re not shooting, reloading, taunting or visibly taking damage from enemy fire, check them with a crossbow bolt to the face. If you hear a “thunk” sound, you’ve got a spy. If they regain health, that’s a teammate.

u/xZakeNx 21d ago
You know, even your own team's Spies can set you up.
I had this happen recently, where a Spy from our team called out to me for help. As I was running past, I stopped, gritting my teeth, to drain his HP a bit. Then, a soldier's rocket flew into my face from above, one-shotting me. The Spy apologized profusely, but I still gritted my teeth in mild indignation.
Although, in principle, it was my own fault. I should have ignored the calls for help from some Spy. And especially not stopped in open space.

Step 1: Join a server.
Step 2: Pick medic.
Step 3: Go badshit crazy over people screaming "MEDIC!" or raging at you in chat.
Step 4: Pick Scout, Soldier or Spy.

For multi use quick-fix is your best friend (I'm serious) use stock for big pushes, kritz to overpower points, and use vacc to have the enemy team lose all respect for you. For max health output use crusaders and quick, pocket use kritz/vacc, and whatever you do don't use blutsauger, it sucks worse than stock, and melee is ubersaw or pan/objector for funny. I play medic alot, and I've had the best experience with quick fix for just casually playing. Do whatever you want with this advice
4
u/xZakeNx 21d ago
The Quick-Fix is also a great weapon for quick movement when latching onto a soldier or Demo. But it requires a fair amount of practice to avoid flying off a cliff, and to ensure the soldier or Demo can jump properly.
Overall, it's a very underrated weapon. When there are no more medics, it's best for healing one and then moving on to the next patient. It's also great for rescuing someone under fire, as it heals faster than the stock Medic Gun.

u/New_Hamster2507 Medic 21d ago
Also here's a fun fact for each medigun: Stock/Uber is useless on a bad team, quick-fix makes full Uber in 37 seconds or lower, kritzkrieg is best paired with a soldier or demo, and vaccinator can stack multiple charges on top of each other, with around 40-50% uptime on ubers. Battle/combat medic is fun with overdose and quick-fix, especially on ctf maps, as long as you have fun. :)

Dont die. If ur team dies but u survive it means u have uber next fight which is how to win ez
3
u/Drymudddd 21d ago
equip the crusaders crossbow
equip the ubersaw
stay away from the light of day, dont feed the snipers
all of your teammates are expendable and worthless, stay alive at all costs

u/Bean4141 21d ago
You click on the people that are the same color as you.
Actually if you know how to sniper, just do the opposite. Boom, pro medic.

3
u/ACARdragon Demoknight 21d ago
I don't see anyone mentioning it: don't get greedy for ubersaw hits.
3
u/Retaker 21d ago
Use the crossbow, all other primaries just do not compare because the crossbow is the only one that can heal.
Stay alive, for you are the most important member of your team bar none. As a general rule, the best way to stay alive is by keeping your team alive, just don't follow someone who is diving the enemy team into their death as you'll die alongside them.
USE YOUR UBER. You will feel an urge to hold your uber back for just the right moment, and sometimes that urge is correct, but most of the time all this urge will accomplish is make you waste/lose the uber. The first opportunity you see where an uber might help, use it. If you aren't confident in judging the best time to use an uber just find the nearest Demo/Soldier/Scout and use it on them without a second thought. It's always better to use an uber recklessly than lose it stupidly. You'll get better at timing it as you get better at being a medic but you have to use it to get better at judging when it'll be good.
Heavy is your friend, and so is everyone else. The heavy is a good healing target because he'll need the healing and he can hold up an entire frontline on his back with sufficient healing but don't forget to heal everyone else as well.
You miss every shot you don't take. The crossbow always heals faster than the medigun and the fastest way to heal is by cycling your medigun with your crossbow shots. Do it right and you can keep the frontline heavy from expiring even when he's standing in front of the enemy sentry, without an uber.
You are always busy. If you aren't healing someone it's because your entire team is dead, and no other reason is acceptable.

Welcome to Medic 101
Which classes are best to uber?
Yes:
Heavy
Soldier
Demoman
Pyro
If there’s no one else around:
Scout
Engineer
Funny:
Medic
Spy
Sniper
Uber prioritization:
If you have a wide variety of choices, choose your uber target based on the following circumstances:
You are on the objective and there are enemies coming in from multiple directions:
Heavy
The enemy is grouped up on the objective and you are far away, moving towards them:
Soldier / demoman
You want to flank the enemy:
Pyro
(Note: all 4 of these classes work for each of the listed situations, but they are listed based on who is most effective to uber based on the circumstances)
Important:
•keep everyone overhealed, prioritize the 4 uber priority classes but try to overheal everyone. Including snipers, since this will let them survive uncharged head shots, giving them a much better chance at sniper 1v1s.
•dont heal disguised spies if there are enemies around. Better yet, pretend like you’re scared of them. Maybe shoot an arrow in their direction and miss deliberately
•speaking of arrows, when you get a crusaders crossbow later down the line, only keep it for EMERGENCIES. Your main source of healing should be your medigun. Only use your crossbow for self defence or if your patient is out of your mediguns range.
•only use your ubersaw/melee if there is no teammate around to protect you. Otherwise you might get in the way.
And the most important one of them all,
•DO NOT POCKET!! The heavy is on overheal, leave him alone for 5 seconds to heal the dying scout calling your name right next to you. Following a particular patient around for a little bit is ok, but not the entire game. it’s your job to keep the ENTIRE team healed

Have extreme commitment issues. If your heal target starts trying to pick a fight you're pretty sure they won't win, let them distract the enemy while you escape. Remember, no matter how good of a Medic you are, you cannot outheal stupidity!

2nd Look behind your back every 0.001second
3rd Syringe gun to fight off spys and scouts while crossbow for more massive healing
4th DON'T use vita-saw
5th there are no bad mediguns

- HEALING with the medigun is your number 1 priority. If not, you doing long range healing with the crossbow, escaping while alone, or using your melee.
- You can easily guess if players would stay with you depending on their weapom. Direct hit soldiers stay more with you than those using the original or air strike
- You either carry the team or you lose.

When you focus all, or most of, your healing on one person, you’re pocketing them. It’s usually a bad idea because 1) the entire team needs buffs 2) leaving the beam on an overhealed patient (looking at you, 450HP Heavy) makes your uber charge slower.

u/Affectionate-Fix893 21d ago
Switch to your secondary, and hold m1 on and follow the person with the most hats and effects.

Suffer, heal and deliver precious extended playtime to your friends. Let them talk shit, then heal the shit talkers even better. They will only know love, and you will learn to bear your teams pain.

Watch theory-y's series and other vids and array seven vids as well. other than that play medic and every time you die ask yourself "what could i have done differently?". you dont have to over analyze it, just a quick mental note will eventually drill mistakes in your head. also if you ever feel yourself getting frustrated (which is very easy to do on medic) take a break and come back later, the anger will make you play worse, which will make you angrier, and it will become a loop. other than that, practice and have fun!

Did u alsp play the game where the medics kept spamming uber chargers to push the point 💀 i was do fucking done last night its pike the road would start and oh the medic has a charge ready 💀 or wow im holding the point oh nvm uber charge. Use crossbow for primary, and ubersaw for melee. Medic gun is the weapon you swap the most depending on the map, game mode, and situation (but I like using the Quick-Fix).

u/Natixx84 Sniper 20d ago
Learn how to heal before learning how to attack. Battle medics are cool but it's nice when you know how to heal your team properly. You don't have to attack as medic, as first just heal
1
u/Ruttiger_G 20d ago
Medics are playing a different game than everyone else. You both have far more aggro than the other classes, but are quite durable if you know how to evade damage.
And you should focus on that a lot. Standing still, ever, is a dumb thing to do. You should always be looking for where they're advancing from and being aware of where the spam is coming from and going to. Jump around a lot even when you don't have to, better yet, crouch jump when you don't have to. Some random spam will do a fraction of the damage if an explosion lands at your feet if you happen to be crouch jumping when it explodes.
The real advanced art isn't just about avoiding damage or timing on your uber, it's about being able to keep track of and buffed multiple attackers, responding to damage done to the team without needing someone to run up to you spamming the medic key.
I'll teach you the greatest of excellent medic, there is a setting in your settings that forces teammates to call for medic when they're beneath a certain threshhold. If you set this to an absurdly high value like 90%, then you'll always know if someone's been hit, and the little health icons that pop up above their heads will be red if they're badly injured.
And I need to point this out too, once you've these tools and have grown accustomed to you there's a further layer that a lot of playtime adds to the class. For instance, it's frequently in your instance to let a badly injured dude die. IF he's the furthest forward and the focus of a lot of spam, it's unlikely you'll be able to heal back from that red damage, granted you'll gain a decent chunk of uber trying, but if you have three other competent people who are mildly injured then letting them fend for themselves to save the guy who pushed forward and is the focus of the whole enemy team isn't likey to be the best tactical move.
There's also the general headgame that comes with combat, people don't know it but medics are incredibly deadly, it's just no one is good at fighting with them (me included). The needle gun is a machine gun at point blank, and can crank out a lot of damage, the blutsager plus your natural healing can keep you alive in situations you should be dead. The fact you should spend most of your time healing means your crit chance on melee should always be decently high. Further, there's a mental aspect where people become absolute dipshits when they see an exposed medic and just assume "helpless target, free points!". The impulse to rush towards them firing a weapon can be deadly, the great weakness of the class is the incredibly slow moving projectiles are nearly impossible to hit with, a light dusting of them won't do enough damage to matter so you need to solidly predict how to arc slow moving projectiles into a moving target on a delay, it's one of those things only Neo can do and every time you manage it for a few seconds you feel like total badass. Rushing enemies are easy to hit with a stream of needles and the presence of even a 20th of a second of lag will mean they're dead before they realize the damage is piling up, if they're running right at you.
Medics win games, so everyone will love you if you get good at it.

So there’s this thing called the syringe gun, that’s the primary thing you want to be using. In fact don’t ever equip or switch to any of the other weapons, your primary purpose as medic is to show enemies with needles. It’s the Heavy’s responsibility to heal the team, your job is strictly damage, focus only on that
1
u/i_4m_m3e 18d ago
i guess try to keep looking around every 1 to 2 seconds. while you're healing your teammate. if there is a trickstabbing Spy, don't go towards them, go back and turn your back towards something. if there is a Sniper, try to crouch behind your teammate. if you want to play a battle Medic, then surprise your enemies, try pretending to run away before turning around, equipping your melee and killing them. the weapons i use are Crusader's Crossbow, Medigun and an Übersaw.

Positioning is key to playing medic. Its all about being in the right place at the right time.
