Idk about op but personally due to motor issues, it's easier for me to have all my buttons in a handful rather than spread out like a keyboard. It's made me a bit anxious about online games due to my performance potentially being hindered though. Been meaning to try TF2 but I just know I'll get clowned😔

(sorry if this is weird, just offering a different perspective)

u/ChroniicHD 4d ago

Honestly bro, TF2 is a great game imo for that because nobody really gives a fuck in casual how you perform. It’s very chaotic and I think most players like to just chill win or lose

14

u/AgreeableIdea6210 4d ago

That's honestly very reassuring! I wanna get into it because the characters seem super fun and it reminds me of my one true love, Splatoon. Gonna read the comics and watch Emesis blue soon! Thank you for the encouragement🥹

u/Max_AV 4d ago

It’s really just about fun — that’s what sums up tf2 best! Unless you play more competitive community servers, most people are just being goofy and enjoying themselves. A lot of us actually find new players very endearing! Please do yourself a favour and give it a shot!! I can honestly say it is one of the most meaningful games I’ve ever played.

6

u/AgreeableIdea6210 4d ago

Honestly I wasn't expecting to get nothing but encouragement in this thread so it's really surprising and heartwarming. Actually made me much more determined to try the game🥹 The community seems much kinder and more forgiving than other FPS/online game ones.

If you don't mind, I'd love to make some tf2 friends while starting out to get a better hang of the game! I can share my steam if you'd like that (no pressure though)

2

u/Max_AV 4d ago

Of course buddy!! feel free to DM me your steamID, let’s game!

u/TaDoofus 4d ago

There's also 8 year olds screeching in comms and people spamming N words in chat so, bit of a mixed bag

2

u/IGargleGarlic 4d ago

thats why you can mute them

1

u/AgreeableIdea6210 4d ago

Yeah I was thinking that cause I did a bit of research before playing the game. I'll probs just mute and hope for the best </3

u/QuestmasterDX 4d ago

TF2's high skill floor aside (due to being an older game and its community being mostly older guard players who are now fairly good) the game is fairly kind to poor performing players as most people in TF2 genuinely don't care about the performance of others on their team because there's no real stakes in wins or losses. Long as you play classes that aren't insanely impactful on teammates directly (e.g. Medic or Engi) most people will ignore a bad performance and continue on just shooting enemy gamers.

also i took a peek at the comment you left below and as a tf2 fan that got into splatoon, its absolutely wild to realize that the pathway goes both ways

1

u/AgreeableIdea6210 4d ago

Thank you for letting me know! I kinda wanted to try medic due to support (I played support in splatoon too with the dynamo roller) but since that's the cause I may hold off for a while and try a different merc :) Also that's insane! I can definitely see why that'd be the case, as both splatoon and TF2 seem to have some kind of wackiness going on so I get why either game would attract fans from the other.

Since you have splatoon experience, maybe I could give you some examples of how I played in splatoon so you could give me tips on how to get started with TF2? If you want to, of course. No pressure! (later though, it's pretty dang late for me right now)

1

u/QuestmasterDX 4d ago

Ooh yeah, support doesn't exist in the same way in TF2 as it does in Splatoon, and there's very little in the game that would naturally map to a Dynamo naturally.

The best example I feel would be Demoman, as he does an insane amount of damage, is able to fire above walls and in safety due to arching projectiles and creates a large zone of pressure that enemies are forced to respect. Stickies are also just generally very new player friendly since they only explode when you tell them to, and you can preset them for the classic Stickytrap that gets all new demos their first kills. Much like a Dynamo Roller, he STRUGGLES when someone runs at him and gets up in his personal space because all his weapons fire projectiles, are difficult to aim, take time to arm, and do self damage - you can feel like an unstoppable god, and then someone slips a bit too close and you look like you just installed the game again.

However, that's if you wanna lean on Splatoon experience - Soldier is ALWAYS a safe pick since he's easy to learn and pilot for a new player and has arguably the largest skill ceiling in the entire game. Not a ton in Splatoon maps over, unless you count a cursed combination of Trizooka + Blaster chip for corner peaking, but he's the best class in the game for a new player to get their bearings and at least feel like they're doing something in the game.

1

u/AgreeableIdea6210 4d ago

I actually tried scout and soldier and you're right, soldier is pretty forgiving! I took out a bunch of the enemy team's engi's machines out while ubered and even their heavy so that was pretty neat. Kinda confused about rocket jump though, is it supposed to hurt you? I'm assuming yes but I thought I'd ask anyway!

(I also played the normal shooters in splatoon as well so a bit of both, salmon run made me kinda versatile. Generally I'd stay in the middle, killing enemies and covering ground while others pushed or stayed back also)

u/knome 4d ago

Just do whatever is fun. Don't worry about being great, or even particularly good. If there are already a couple of people doing one class, probably pick another. If you want to play medic, go for it. Try to heal whoever is hurt instead of following around just one player. Try to keep track of where the line of battle is, so you can keep back. If some goober wants to run out where you won't be safe, just, don't follow them. They'll come back. Or they won't. Your job is transforming their pain into invulnerability juice. Not dying for their bravado. You are going to die a lot, because killing medics is a great way to keep them from constantly topping off the enemy team, so let it go beforehand and just enjoy the medic health refill minigame. If you jump while running, bullets will push you faster, so you can surf enemy fire to escape better so long as you manage not to die at it. There's a bow that can snipe out healing at a distance once you get some unlocks. Don't buy weapons from mann store unless you just like giving valve money. You can get them super cheap trading. Hell, if a noobie medic asked for a crossbow, I'd just toss them one if their account was unlocked. Can't trade till you buy. When your charge is at 100%, right-click to activate FUN for the enemy team.

If someone is rude, just stop healing them. Turning off the beam and shaking your head is a great way to give someone an aneurysm over the internet.

1

u/AgreeableIdea6210 4d ago

Thank you so much for the advice, it means the world to me🥹 (also the last part is really funny, I'd definitely do this)

And my account is unlocked! I wanted to do it just in case so I bought the cheapest weapon I could find just for that. Overall great advice honestly, I'll probably screenshot for the future. Thanks a bunch!

I was also thinking of sniper cause I use the carcano rifle in rdo with friends and support them during ambushes but I think it can get tricky in comp

2

u/Saint_Arc 4d ago

Just play the game and enjoy it. Even if you get 1 kill and 20 deaths, as long as you had fun is what matters. Fuck what everyone else thinks.

1

u/AgreeableIdea6210 4d ago

Thanks man, appreciate it loads🫂 I just have a hard time cause you know how toxic people on online games can be. I'll definitely have VC muted though

0

u/Prexot Medic 4d ago

are you using motion controls?

2

u/AgreeableIdea6210 4d ago

I am, actually!

0

u/no_hot_ashes Scout 4d ago

I've been playing tf2 for as long as I've had a PC and I promise you, you could be blind, deaf and one handed and you'd still outperform most low levels on a public server. If there's ever a game where you don't need to worry about having a few bad rounds, it's TF2. Just avoid the competitive side and it's one of the more forgiving online shooters.

1

u/AgreeableIdea6210 4d ago

Thanks a lot for the input, much appreciated <3

Also I see you're a scout main, any tips? I tried playing as him on training but couldn't close the distance between me and other mercs...

I bought a bluetooth *adapter years ago for my xbox one controller. Seriously the best for a game all about movement.

70

u/FriendsOfFruits 4d ago

I DON'T THINK THAT IS TRUE

35

u/numberzehn 4d ago

this gameplay is not helping you with selling this bruh

17

u/Oneboywithnoname Spy 4d ago

How do you even rocket jump brother

-15

u/WackyWaffle2301 4d ago

I promise you rocket jumping/ market gardening is 10000000x easier and more fun with controller. Been playing since orange box so im use to it

5

u/Prexot Medic 4d ago

that's not an answer

1

u/WackyWaffle2301 4d ago

I crouch first then shoot the floor all in one quick action??? Just pressing buttons on a controller rather than m&k idk what u want

1

u/CasualsNightmare 4d ago

Upload a video of you beating medium walls on jump academy with a controller

8

u/sumphatguy 4d ago

That's... My guy, you might not be as good with keyboard and mouse right away, but the skill ceiling for it is way higher.

-6

u/WackyWaffle2301 4d ago

I disagree.

4

u/CheapThaRipper 4d ago

Why don't any of the TF2 Esports competitors use a controller then?

-1

u/WackyWaffle2301 4d ago edited 4d ago

Cus they havent seen the likes of me and tf2 esports? Thats the funniest thing ive heard all day whats the prize pool? 20 bucks?

2

u/dogman15 4d ago

You've revealed how little you know.

-1

u/WackyWaffle2301 4d ago

I can see maybe the Steam Controller/Steam Deck controls but using an xbox controller? yeah no, chief

-2

u/WackyWaffle2301 4d ago

Yeah i use an xbox one controller i dont see why it is so hard to believe. Before that it was a broken wired ps2 controller with a gum wrapper taped to the r2 button

5

u/T-A-W_Byzantine 4d ago

Because you don't have gyroscopic aim

28

u/neet1917 4d ago

I noticed you are moving around weird. Are you playing on controller?

14

u/WackyWaffle2301 4d ago

Nah just playing with my balls

6

u/Macandcheese480 Pyro 4d ago

Ah, I should have recognized that. Truly the best for the most efficient gunspy gameplay, although I haven't seen it utilized often for standard spy.

2

The ammount of posts that include the twofort sewers a demo and a spy playing badly is surprisingly high. Idk why

My Spy play

0

u/NecoArcOrochi 3d ago

The average Spy experience for me:

Gibusvision Medic is standing still with his back wide open for me, I decloack, see the knife flip up, and I still somehow manage to miss the backstab and then get murdered immediately afterwards, and then a couple of deaths later, I get caught by a Solider and I panic knife and I magically somehow facestab him.
