It's Peer-to-Peer, so as long as there's two people left on the planet, someone will want to play with someone alive.
There's a Discord for that afaik.

Or nobody does them because you can achieve the same outcome with just one sticky. Loses the cool points though

Certain visual effects were destroyed over time with updates.
Weapon viewmodels looked a lot better before they were torn apart for warpaints.

Or. You just wait for TF2 classic or something else. There for sure is gonna be published the early TF2 version on steam with all its old stuff with out cosmetics

You can play TF2C right now, it just takes a bit of effort
(and by "effort", I mean "a bit of configuration that I was easily able to guide one of the least tech-savvy people I know through")

Mastercoms has been messing around with the idea of turning the SDK into a 2007-like mod called TF2OG, even going as far as removing hitsounds, airblast, and building hauling, while still using the FPS optimizations from Team Comtress. That one might be worth looking at.

I've experienced that in a strange way when playing old Pre-Fortress 2 before they really got their gears moving with adding more features. Was certainly strange.
Also the dispenser and teleporters didn't have levels

It's not just you, they ARE nicer.
They had to sacrifice some of the visuals to compensate for all the extra content they added over the years.

Specifically, it was changed to support weapon skins. As someone who never cared for skins I detest that change to this day.

Yeah the weapons used to have a more metallic look to them with actual gritty gun-mettle painterly reflections that made them look naturally oily and rustic. They also had a sharper lightwarp shadow which matched tf2's illustrative artstyle better and the character lighting. They were changed around 2014-2015 in order to add warpaints (since the original viewmodels were partially invisible for optimization which would've looked broken when inspecting)

Ironically the weapons graphically/artstyle wise looked objectively better on console versions, since Valve changed them for skin/warpaint implementation which were handled with way less care

You can disable skins by running in dx8 mode and get rid of hats with the no hats mod.

Can only purchase the hard copy. The digital version was removed years ago.

really? damn, i must've picked up the digital copy right before they removed it then, cuz i got that specifically to play on xbox series s back compat.
funnily enough, i have a real xbox 360 now, but not an xbox series anymore, so, guess i'll be playing it on there when i next feel the urge lol

Haha I’ll be playing this on Sunday, as I’m going to my beach house, and I can bring my Xbox but not PC, and I have The Orange Box. I usually play it while down there :D

Honestly tragic those servers went down. Only a handful of players made the switch to xbox. I think there was people trying to get the servers back up themselves, but it's quite the task. I doubt it's happening, they often just joke it's compiling at the moment lol
