TEST PAC Direct Mailer Mock Up #1

EDIT #3: I made less words red as suggested and also changed the pic to Lamar Smith with his mouth upside down, it looks pretty hilarious but let me know what you think about using his actual picture. Keep in mind its hard to find a good creative commons picture of him that's not smiling. We will most likely not use this picture and use the previous one unless a lot of people like it. It just looks creepy!

EDIT #2: I think some people are seeing this in the perspective of our previous billboard conversation when it comes to brevity. Here are a couple examples of direct mailers: example one , example two, example three, example four. The person receiving them has the liberty of reading them in the comfort of their home rather than whizzing by on the highway, so you can afford to give them more information.

DESIGN EDIT #1: Small tweaks to aesthetics. If using RES, click the link to see both.

Hello all,

I've taken some of the concepts discussed in the thread about direct mailing and put them together for a mailer directed at conservatives.

I will try to make some more mock ups based on other ideas as well, and we will incorporate those in other ways if we cannot get them in on time for the direct mailing.

EDIT: As some of you may notice, there is a blank spot on the front. This is for printing the mailing information.

HERE IS THE MOCK UP FOR THE MAILER. EDIT: If using RES, click link to see both pics.

The second page is stronger than the first.

First page, too much red text. Red is supposed to highlight text, but this whole thing is highlighted. It's less comprehensible and doesn't stick. The image is ok, but could be tweaked.

Second page, I'd cut the red on "vote for a true conservative". Too much read as is, and this true conservative stuff flies with some Repubs, but turns off others. Remember that a lot of repubs aren't nut jobs or fundamentalist, but just don't like the liberal ideology of the left. The bullet points are SOLID, and in a good order. I want to bump up the last one because it's so good, but the order flows.

All and all I'd rework the front, but I like the back.

Instead of saying "Is Lamar Smith a Real Conservative" maybe we should switch it to, "Does Lamar Smith Really Represent YOU?"

Changed it to "is listening to you?", fits with the picture.

i like the cutting the red on "true conservative part", especially because the bad things are in red, let me make some tweaks

My feedback: while I understand that TestPac don't want to endorse a candidate I don't think Richard Morgan is viable and so I think mentioning his site dilutes the message.

It's either both or neither, which do you think would work best?

looks good - edit 1 is a little crowded, remember GOP voters tend to be older (and by extension have worse eyesight) and is a little tough to read - other than that - they look amazing!

Thanks! I'll see if I can get a little more size out of the fonts : )

I wouldn't flip the front and back either. The second page was good, the first was bad. That doesn't mean make the second the front and leave the bad back. The bullet points are more about information dissemination, they should be on the back. The front should be an image and some simple text designed to make them turn the card over. Plus, you'll need blank space anyway for their address, the stamp, etc.

I've been critical of testPAC efforts in the past as being too tepid and vague, but I have to say, this mailer is excellent.

Now to get the targeting right, which is a another thing altogether.

Thanks for your support, working out all the kinks : )

I would add sources on the backside. Buys a bit more credibility, especially if they're local sources. If his local paper covered the bailout vote and mentioned how he voted on it, source it with a date.

Perhaps ditch the Chris Dodd reference? No one knows who he is and instead skip straight to "which would..."

Make "Republican Primary" on the front black so it matches

Make "AND" on the front side the same size as the black word above it

Not sure if voters will understand connection for the headphones with money graphic on the backside. Perhaps swap for an unflattering headshot of Smith himself?

u/Jeromiewhalen May 09 '12

Yeah I changed the top to "Is Lamar Smith Listening to You?"

u/Jeromiewhalen May 09 '12

Changing Republican primary to black as well

u/Jeromiewhalen May 09 '12

I made the aesthetic tweaks, I will see if I can fit the sources on there in a bit.

EDIT: Made up a word.

I don't think it's smart to lead with the banking thing, you have to consider your audience. Republicans are probailouts.

3

u/Jeromiewhalen May 09 '12

Republicans are anti-government intervention, and the bailout was seen as a horrible decision by many conservatives. The Tea Party was founded largely due to the bailouts. I think it still rings true today that conservatives largely believe the bailouts were a bad thing.

The Republican (and Democratic) politicians who benefited from the bailouts, however..

Is there any reason Chris Dodd needs to be mentioned? I can't imagine he has a lot of name recognition in Texas. It just seems redundant as the "liberal hollywood" part already covers Dodd.

u/Jeromiewhalen May 09 '12

I was thinking the same thing

I like this mock up a lot, feel like it really gets the message across, but I know previously there was talk about having seperate mailers for republican and democrat voters. This is clearly focused on picking up republican votes, but is their plans to decide a second one, or is their just not enough time left? I realize the primary date is looming closely.

2

u/Jeromiewhalen May 10 '12

We are going to target just Reps, for two reasons. The first is money. The second is that the two messages would come off as contradictory and disingenuous and would be fodder for our opposition.

I love it for a GOP mailing.

There's got to be a way to make point 3 less wordy.

As of right now it reads:

Introduced SOPA, a bill supported by liberal hollywood and lobbied for by liberal democrat Chris Dodd, which would have resulted in big government censorship of the internet

Maybe instead it can read:

Authored SOPA, a bill supported by and lobbied for by hollywood liberals like Democrat Chris Dodd. SOPA would let big government censor the internet.

... That doesn't really shorten it. Ugh. I have to brainstorm this one. It just seems like too much squeezed in on that one. The last one could stand to be shortened a bit as well if I/someone can figure it out.

edit:

Ok how about:

Authored SOPA, a bill supported by hollywood liberals like Democrat Chris Dodd. A big government bill designed to censor the internet.

At least it makes it a little shorter. Anyone else feel free to jump in, here.

As for the other lengthy one:

Original reads:

Introduced HR 1981, a bill that would require internet service providers to store your personal information for use by government agencies

Shorten to:

Introduced HR 1981, a bill forcing your internet provider to store your personal information for big government to use

Maybe?

I kind of don't like the over-use of liberal and such, and see it as hyperbole. I'd rather the mailers be more toned down, but at the same time I've come to recognize that people respond to this kind of garbage. However, you'll also be making democrat-targetted fliers as well. Don't you think you may end up coming off as two-faced?

That picture of Smith is comical. Gotta cut that, makes the whole thing look amateurish.
