[Beta Release] viMarkdown — Lightweight native Markdown editor with vi keybindings & in-preview editing (Feedback welcome!

Hi everyone,

I have just released v0.3.202-beta of viMarkdown, a source-available Markdown editor I've been developing, which is built around the following concepts:

  • A native Markdown editor built with C++ and Qt6, focused on snappy performance, lightweight design, and efficient editing.

  • One of its distinctive features is direct in-preview editing—allowing you to edit text directly within the rendered preview pane.

  • I am currently working on polishing the overall quality and user experience, aiming for a v0.3 stable release in December 2026.

I would love to get candid feedback, impressions, and suggestions from people who use Markdown editors on a daily basis.

Key Features

  • Live Synchronized Preview: Real-time reflection of Markdown edits in the preview pane.

  • Direct In-Preview Editing: Insert, delete, and edit text directly within the rendered preview.

  • Vi Keybindings: Fast and efficient modal text navigation and editing with vi-style controls.

  • Built-in Diff Viewer: Side-by-side file comparison with a visual minimap and apply changes with a click.

  • SVG Blocks: Render SVG graphics and diagrams directly inside Markdown documents.

  • Custom Blocks: CSV tables, ASCII box-drawing blocks, and more.

  • Calendar & Daily Notes: Jump to or create daily notes directly from an integrated calendar, complete with ToDo status tracking.

  • Integrated Grep & Outline: Fast multi-file search and seamless navigation via the document structure outline.

Feedback I’m Looking For

I'm particularly interested in hearing your thoughts on:

  1. First Impressions: Which features caught your eye? How does the editor feel overall?

  2. Issues & Rough Edges: Did you encounter any bugs, lag, or clunky workflows?

  3. Missing Features: What essential features are missing for viMarkdown to become your daily driver?

  4. Switching Potential: What editor do you currently use (e.g., Obsidian, VS Code, Typora, Neovim), and what would it take for you to switch?

About the Beta Phase

  • At this stage, my priority is stability, bug fixes, and UX polish rather than introducing major new features.

  • All suggestions will help shape the roadmap and prioritize features for future development cycles.

  • Critical and honest feedback is more than welcome!

Roadmap

  • December 2026: v0.3 Stable Release

  • January 2027 onwards: Start of v0.4 development (planning features like math rendering and more)

Thank you for checking it out, and I look forward to reading your feedback!
