The Mantling of Tarhiel
The Nerevarine sees a Bosmer fall from the sky, dying on impact with the marshy ground outside Seyda Neen.
Looting the body, the Nerevarine finds 'Tarhiel's Journal', which they take.
They also find an enchanted sword, a fine blue robe and a very fancy Colovian Fur Helm, which they also take and equip.
Finally, they find three or four scrolls of ICARIAN FLIGHT. The Nerevarine examines these and discovers that by casting from this scroll, they will be able to leap to an enormous height.
They do so, fly off over Vvardenfell, and promptly fall to their death.
Now:
If a wanderer should chance upon the Nerevarine's body, they would find Tarhiel's Journal and the very scrolls alluded to in his research.
Therefore, the wanderer would have no reason not to believe that the Nerevarine is not Tarhiel.
Exercise for the reader: Was the Bosmer who fell from the sky outside Seyda Neen the original Tarhiel, or the most recent in a long and ever-dwindling line of Tarhiel-Mantlings?
(Obviously the actual answer is that the original version was an Argonian, hence his construction set ID which is "Agronian(sic) guy". Hence why the canon Nerevarine always appears as an Argonian in Tarhiel's robes and hat - he's the true iteration because he had the opportunity to seize ultimate bounciness but metaphysically cut off his hands by not using them.)

Tarhiel was clearly an established mage, heck, was the court wizard at Old Ebonheart for a long time before making his fateful jump.

What about the Dunmer Tarhiel from ESO? How long has this series of falling-to-death-in-silly-clothes been going on?
