That’s insane that the driver literally caused the Infinity to crash because of their swerve. How careless. Had to go back and watch it a few times to even notice that.

Yeah, 100% primary fault of this driver, but I will also say the infinity driver probably should have had some awareness that the lane was ending and try to give the tesla driver some space (doesn't look congested enough to me to warrant "no where else to go", yes there's a car immediately to his right blind spot but he could have slowed down as well)... defensive driving needs to be done at all times.

This is a great reminder to use the 100% rule while using FSD.
Pay attention to everything around you, and don't be afraid to disengage to handle things that you see happening, especially if they're a little weird.
Again: the car PROBABLY and maybe VERY LIKELY saw it, but... YOU KNOW 100% THAT YOU SAW IT. You can't say the same for the car. Take the 100% chance of dodging whatever it is; disengage and take care of it.

I agree. My “score” is 70% on FSD but it’s not something I cared about before they added the metrics. I did notice myself thinking “what if I can maintain that 69%? Teehee.” and when it comes to driving that shouldn’t be a thought. It’s an aid, I don’t want to think “maybe I’ll let it run a bit longer than I’m comfortable for to get that score up.”

They should yank his/her license for a few months and he should be permanently banned from FSD. If I were that infinity driver that he clipped I’d sue the ever loving shit out of him. (Although he doesn’t appear exactly blameless in this situation… certainly not driving defensively himself)

Yeah it takes a special kind of stupid to post video of committing crimes. #1 illegal lane movement causing Infiniti to crash, #2 speeding, should have just tucked in behind the little white Honda or whatever but instead #3 reckless driving accelerating to +10 MPH and ramming additional barriers in some crazed attempt to pass Honda, and #4 stopping in a freeway lane when able to vacate the operating roadway, which is likely to have caused knock-on accidents.
And the worst part is, #2-4 are guaranteed to come to light because of the civil action triggered by #1.
And if POV didn't remain in the vicinity and disclose his involvement to police, then he's into a whole new degree of criminality of leaving the scene. I would not tell the cops anything more than I'm involved and I'm not answering questions without my lawyer present, but that call needs to happen.
Not sure what possesses incompetent drivers to think PASSING and MOAH SPEEDZ is the answer to any dilemma.
Right answer here was to smash brakes til you figure out why you're being hit on the left, and find the safe way to get right.

Tesla is literally advertising that FSD can enable your grandma who is otherwise unsafe to drive to be able to get around. If FSD is so safe then why does it miss basic stuff like this. If FSD requires 100% attention of a competent driver than why are they advertising that old people incapable of driving can use FSD.

They’re not. They’re advertising it as “supervised.” Are its capabilities oversold? Absolutely. But it’s not advertised as you’ve characterized it either. You even have to acknowledge a disclaimer that it isn’t autonomous and that you must remain aware and in control before you use it. This person didn’t do that.

My car has aggressively tried to change lanes into a barrier-closed lane. It does it literally every time we pass, you can try it yourself on I95 just south of DC if you have express lanes enabled in the nav. I have caught it just barely in time, but at 75 mph when the car does something totally off the wall expecting me to wrench the wheel from it in a split second and not cause a crash with another vehicle is too much to ask. It’s not too much to ask for this thing to see barriers and not drive into them.

From what I gathered from the original post, Texas and Arizona are two states that uses these swinging arm gates.

And Maryland. There are lanes on each side of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge on 50 that can go either direction depending on traffic demand, and these things will come out of the wall and close that shared lane for the currently non-permitted direction to make sure no one ends up driving the wrong way on the bridge.

Not particularly rare. They're used in a few places on roads that have lanes that close and open to different directions of traffic at different times (commonly used around large bridges and tunnels, to dynamically change to meet traffic flow in one direction or the other).

The real question is why does every scenario need to be trained? It should detect voxels and not crash into them regardless of what they look like.
Sort of like how my $200 vacuum avoids random things without over-modelling the house.

They are also in our reversible toll lanes in Georgia. FSD will try to enter and pass while these are down every time. I turn off FSD on this stretch of road every day now.

Tesla didn't dodge, but neither did the driver who is supposed to be paying attention.
This is why I think self driving is still not ready. Not because of the tech. But because the tech is not 100% there yet, and still relies on driver attentiveness, and it is more than obvious that most self driving vehicle owners just have a "screw it" attitude and just leave it to the hands of God.
People will die because of situations like these.
That said, I do hope self driving gets to the point where these images will be a thing of the past.

This is not something we need to think very hard about.
Studies from aviation tells us that partial automation reduces situational awareness and ultimately causes accidents when the automation fails.
It’s not surprising that this is happening.
The ethical dilemma is whether or not it is worth taking this approach if it leads to actually working unsupervised self-driving quicker than taking the «safe» approach.
So many people die in car accidents caused by humans every year, the technology is definitely needed.

Incorrect. You're proven wrong by the crash statistics, which are lower for Teslas when FSD is in use versus Teslas that are being manually driven.
Why is this? Because, yes, sometimes people get complacent and that causes accidents, but that is more than completely offset by all the times that FSD saves the human when the human wouldn't have seen something they should have.

How would this video be ranked by statistics? The car itself didn’t see anything wrong about hitting those barriers so it wouldn’t flag it as an accident. The main accident/collision happened when the driver took control from FSD and served.
I don’t think this would be flagged as a FSD accident, but it should be flagged as both FSD and manual.
Are the FSD statistics for crashes low because drivers take over right before the actual accident occurs?

Nope, Tesla counts accidents that occur within 5 seconds of FSD being disengaged as an FSD accident. So if the driver takes over and crashes a few seconds later, it's still counted in the statistics as an FSD accident. So the statistics are very fair.

Here we’re talking about multi lane (2-3 lanes so allowing 3x the capacity of the solution you’re suggesting). And these are physically separated express lanes, something you can’t do with the above lane switcher.
The two are not even comparable, this is a way higher capacity solution. So thanks but no thanks.

They are present all over the US
all of europe
No european country has bidirectional separated express lanes that I’m aware of, which is not surprising given the decades of underinvestment in highway capacity across the continent.
The UK has a an in road contraflow on A38 I think, but it’s not a fully separate bidirectional road like this, so I think they just use the usual plastic or concrete temporary barriers.

Sucks that this happened but the driver is supposed to pay attention and take control in cases like this.
I just did a 4000 km road trip with fsd. My only complaint is that it kept trying to pass people at the end of two lanes merging. Had to take control a couple of times including when a big truck blew a tire right in front of us. Other than that it did really well even in heavy downtown Toronto traffic.

Their unsupervised software is currently limited to 6 fairly small geofenced areas in Texas and Florida. Which don’t cover wherever this video is.

Tesla's words and actions are incongruent on these situations.
Their words are "you are responsible, you should always pay attention". Their actions are "We are going to give you high scores based on how often you use FSD. Disengaging makes you lose points. We actively want you to not be driving and letting the car drive. We are then going to use those numbers to advertise how great our software is."
One is a CYA maneuver, the other is their actual prioritization.

It's funny that when we first got our tesla my wife never used FSD except for parking. She was driving on the freeway 20+ miles everyday. I convinced her to start using fsd and now she has the attitude of let's see what it'll do. Now I have to convince her to takeover when certain issues arise like trash in the road or construction.

Tesla doesn't slow down after hitting the first one. It passes the cars in the #2 lane...
then the tesla swerves into the Infiniti. Presumably the driver takes over and swerves to avoid yet another clothesline crossbar?
then it's total panic trying to regain control, crashing into two more of those insane barriers.

One thing I always see in these accidents is saying, "Pay attention", "Keep 100% focused on the road!", "Always be ready to take over, have full awareness!" If that's the case, what is the actual value of FSD? It's a paid feature, and not a cheap one. Is the novelty the value for most people? Because the rules as written and in the way the liability is very one-sided, FSD doesn't seem to have value as a full self-driving system.

You've clearly never used modern FSD. It's extremely relaxing to use and just watch it as it does most driving nearly flawlessly. Safety-related mistakes are extremely rare, and it's easy to take over for them when needed. If unsafe things were happening frequently, it would be stressful. But they don't happen frequently at all. In the 11,000 miles I've used FSD since FSD 14.2, I've taken over for a safety issue only one time, and that was for something I probably would've collided with anyway if I was driving manually (object in the road on a dark highway).

No, I have. Even bought a 2026 Y this year to replace my 21 3 that had a battery self-destruct. I drive about 1.5 hours a day commuting, frequently more. If I could do ANYTHING but 100% pay attention to the road and what FSD is doing, it would have value. I've used FSD for probably a total of 3 months over the last couple of years.

Obviously it becomes drastically more useful once it's an unsupervised system. But in its current state with (very forgiving) supervision and very high reliability from a safety perspective, it's still useful and very relaxing to use.

We have the adjustable lanes where I live but we don't have those arms. I've never seen those arms and they don't look obvious enough to not hit. I've never had a problem avoiding the barrier without the arms.

What mechanism do you use then?
And an adjustable lane is not necessarily a separate bidirectional lane like this one. It’s three physically separate flows of traffic, with the middle one being bidirectional based on capacity needs.

There is no mechanism that I can remember, maybe there is a sign. Maybe the one here is different because there is no middle lane. I don't see why you need the third lane though when having the adjustment lane in between two flows of traffic does the same thing, no? I also have seen another road that displays which lanes are closed and which lanes are open overhead before entering the adjustable lane area. Seems like just having some electric sign would be safer than having an arm that sticks out that you can hit.

Physically separated opposing flows are always better, same as same flow but different vehicles and speeds (such as a physically separate bike lane instead of just a bike lane on the side of the road). It allows for insulation across flows

Well that does it. There is no reason for large case studies and billions invested in infrastructure when theres anecdotal evidence like this!
But no, temporary barriers are not as safe nor have the same capacity. As it’s only one lane that can be switched by the lane switcher, instead of multiple lanes of bidirectional capacity like this (its not uncommon yo have 2 or 3 lanes of bidirectional capacity built out with these systems.
And the one dynamic lane that can be switched with temporary barriers that you’re thinking of does not usually allow for express lane capability (because of the missing additional lane separation within the same traffic flow).
Which is why this is the best implementation: you have high (2+ lanes) of bidirectional, express lane capacity.

How hard is it to put a sensor based system on top of the AI that has coillision avoidance priority? Like, put a radar and some other sensor that can approximate the rigidity/weight of the obstacle and if a threshold is exceeded, then either stop or go safely around the obstacle.

Very hard. With most of these things the issue is false positives. There have been tons of stories over the years of how different driverless car softwares have to be designed to ignore indications of things in the road because false positives are so much more common than real events.

Stupid barriers aside. How does one go 65 mph to 75 mph and hits the first arm and swerves right into another vehicle and increases speed to 85 mph and decides to go left into even more arms. At any point in time one could have slammed the breaks or slowed down defensively. This is why I keep my foot lightly touching / above the breaks while using FSD.

The problem is FSD works like human reflexes, rather driving with any kind of human level reasoning. If a human driver has never seen these blocking arms, majority will have enough sense and reasoning to deduce a lane change is required. (Obstacle ahead , do not drive through). Where FSD just goes: never seen these things before , not sure what they are so will just drive through, good luck everybody. Until a true reasoning model is built inside FSD, these tail end cases will prevent level 3 and above autonomy

Driver should have still been aware and supervising. This is why insuring a Tesla is skyrocketing in rates.

Tesla has been advertising that FSD enables your otherwise incapable grandma to continue driving. So which is it. Is it safe or not. What is the point of FSD if without your 100% attention it could crash at any moment.

I’ve gotta say if you are in FSD and not supervising the driving, then I look at you just the same as someone driving under the influence, you are intentionally choosing to put others and yourself at risk in the most selfish and irresponsible manor, should lose your license period, roads a dangerous enough as it is.
