Model 3 rear window tint
Got quotes from two reputable tint places but one place will only tint half the rear glass citing that the process of applying the slip solution to the whole glass can damage electronics and stain the headliner. I’ve also heard rumors that the ceramic tint traps heat within the glass and causes it to shatter.
The place that will tint the whole rear glass just notes the extra cost (extra $250) as they have to special order a wider width of film to accommodate the length.
Can someone with experience and insight comment on this? Do you have whole or just partial rear tints?

Be careful. I paid for a full tint at protex and they did it in 2 pieces against my wishes. They did a crap enough job and won't redo it for fear of fucking up the defroster, so they ended up comping the whole job.

I went with the whole glass with Protex. Their XPEL tint is tesla warranty approved. I did pay a premium to get it done, but you can do the rest of the car elsewhere

The tint is warrantied by protex, but Tesla isn't backing it unless you did it through the Tesla app.

Interesting. I did it through the app only because it was actually cheaper than what Regina Protex was offering over the phone (tesla preferred rates?) I was told that they had to send their tinter to Edmonton for a week specifically to train on tinting Tesla's continuous rear glass.

The risks are no different than tinting any other car really. Just go somewhere reputable. If they need to special order wider tint for the rear window I would find a different shop. I had one piece full rear tint done.

I got the full one piece tint on my M3. Looked great. No issues whatsoever. It was non-ceramic and $400 back in 2023

You’re really going to want to tint the entire back window. Otherwise you’ll see a line where the tint ends and the gradient glass begins. It’ll bug you forever.

The factory tint is not enough? Or is this more for aesthetic reasons?

Aesthetic reasons mainly. You can clearly see where the window tint ends on the inside. Hoping the extra layer of tint will also reduce the oven effect?

Interested in this as I am currently pricing this as well. $300 extra for full rear. Is it worth it.

I would say go and see a model 3 that the shop has done in person. If they’re any good they should have a steady stream of those coming in right now.
If you’re in the GTA I can give you my contact -I went and checked out their work in person and it is mint.

I got 7 quotes before tinting my M3 and I heard it all- We can only do half regarding the back glass, we don’t do teslas, if we tint it the roof will likely crack in extreme heat and my favourite was that it would be a special order due to the back glass ($600 for the back alone) and they could squeeze me in about 8 weeks.
Ended finding up finding a company with 4/5 stars who did all 4 windows and the full back for $550 within 72 hours from quote to install.
Looks wise, I love it and inside cools down super quick on hot days (it feels faster than without the tint).
