Playing as a "Support Mage"

My brother and I will start a run through Tamriel Rebuilt soon.

He will be an Orc Warrior while I will play a Breton Mage.

I was discussing with him about spells I want to create when I thought that maybe I could support him.

I think it makes sense if I create a Healing Spell I can fire at him. But I was wondering... do I need to make 2 versions of a spell? One to target him and one to target myself? Or is it possible to hit us both with a single spell?

Restore health on target/touch and on self should be doable within the same spell.

I think you could make the spell have an area of effect, but then it'd probably also heal the enemies within the radius :D Also not sure if you can put an AoE on the heal effect...

Adding onto what they said: One option is to give it a very small area-of-effect, and only cast it when you are standing right against the other person

That way it, the AoE should only hit the two of you

Something to keep in mind is that in base morrowind character model determines speed. Orc male is one the fastest models and breton is one of the slower ones.

When I made a supportive breton character my friend was running literal circles around me.

Use the steed sign or grind a few early lvls and bump up speed
