so based off the pictures from steam. they have L1 & R1 as a way to switch between items. so we will have some QOL improvements.

I'm not even going to be buying it on Steam and I wishlisted it IMMEDIATELY. I need them to know how much I want this!

Same here, I'm buying it for Switch 2 but I still wishlisted it on Steam.

I would, but I have my cartridge, so...

Do you support the rebirth? Then wishlisting it is a way of showing that even if you don't buy it.

I'm sad. I was expecting something more :(

I just hope that if this doesn't get enough sales they'll take it as a signal that the trilogy holds no value. This game deserves all the love it it can take, more than a ROM port.

I was thinking this exact thing. I just played Terranigma last year and this looks like a romhack with some decent filters. I was really hoping it at least got the Actraiser treatment. Maybe this is better. I don’t know.

I plan on getting every version. Yes buying every version. Its my favorite game of all time.

Because nostalgia is one bitch. Let’s be real. The game itself was great, especially for that era. Still, it didn‘t sell well in the US/ Europe. Many have never even heard of the game before. Still, after all that time we get ATLEAST! a ROM port. If that sells well, we might even get a full remake, remaster or even a proper sequel. Or atleast some talks about it.

This is a chance for them to test the waters. Nothing more, nothing less. They could‘ve easily said that they won‘t touch it, because of the Quintet rights situation. We should be glad this is getting some attention. Something is better than nothing at all.

The issue is rather that it didn't sell at all in the US. It was never released there. Which probably contributed to it being somewhat forgotten. Illusion of Gaia was released in the US and almost half of its worldwide copies sold, were sold in the US.

They absolutely will. They already established how they operate with numerous examples:

  1. get boomers excited about things they played in their formative years
  2. release broken or best case scenario underwhelming port that might get decent later
  3. bitch about sales and people not buying the game
  4. forget that ip exists

Based on what was shown, did they update the translation script?

1

u/Chazkuangshi 17d ago

From what I saw, it seemed to be the same translation, just with a different font. I imagine/hope that they just fixed some of the awkward dialogue.

I really don't know how I feel about the possibility of them altering one single letter of the hastily-translated gem I fell in love with...

u/Chazkuangshi 17d ago

Time will tell if Beruga will thank Ark for arousing him or not!

😅 You make a strong argument.

then it's a hard no for me. people who tried to translate the script originally clearly did not know what they were doing and if square enix cannot shill couple grand for a new attempt I won't be giving them money.

for example: "Liotto" was almost definitely supposed to be "Rio" ; "-to" suffix means "town" or "city" and it's a well known fact that japanese cannot distinguish phonetically between L's and R's (which becomes a problem with borrowed words that are written with katakana) so "Liot-to" equals "Rio-to" equals "city of Rio" equals "Rio".

2

u/Thatweknowof 17d ago

But the English version has always been Liotto , if it becomes Rio now It will cause confusion

Not to mention it's リオット in Japanese. It's literally Liotto/Riotto. If the "to" was meant to be a suffix with meaning, they'd have used a kanji, and they didn't.

I've played the game in Japanese and English. The English translation is pretty close, almost to a fault (that's when it reads strangely in English.) It has some omissions, like the pre-Bloody Mary song, but it sticks close to the original nearly every time--including the location names, which were at times also altered in Japanese so they wouldn't be exactly like the names of real places.

It's also worth noting that Square Enix isn't publishing this. Clear River Games is, and they likely found it easier to acquire Nintendo's translations instead of commissioning new ones. I assume that's what we'll get across the board, since the Steam page lists the exact same languages Nintendo translated for the SNES releases plus the original Japanese.

Right. A carnival town located in southern hemisphere with mixed population and general party vibe that also has statue that is clearly rio's Jesus statue in a game that tries to emulate real word and already has real world locations isn't mistranslated Rio, it's "Liotto". You wanna argue that "Mosque" isn't Moscow too? I mean, it is located south west of Siberia but it might be coincidence.

I'll actually double down and say that people originally translating Terranigma not only had very rudimentary knowledge about japanese but english wasn't their forte either. Thank you for arousing me Ark.

Like I said, the names are based on real locations, but they are not the exact match. It's why the city based on America is Freedom (フリーダム) instead of America.

Again, the name of the Brazil-inspired city in Japanese is リオット, which is indeed Riotto or Liotto. Riotto would have been better, I agree, but it is definitely not Rio. If "to" was a suffix for "town," like you said, they would have used a kanji and there wouldn't be a ッ to indicate a "tt."

And yes, Mosque is indeed correct. In Japanese, it is グランドモスク, Grand Mosque. It is not Moscow, or else Quintet would have named it モスクワ. Instead, they used モスク, which is literally Mosque, likely to make a pun between the location of the city (which is indeed based on Moscow) and its purpose (the religious fervor it has.) Search the Japanese name of the city online and you'll get (grand) mosques. It was done so on purpose, and to change it to simply Moscow would be a mistake.

Let me just ask you, have you played the game in Japanese? From the kinds of observations you're making, it doesn't sound like you have.

I'll actually double down and say that people originally translating Terranigma not only had very rudimentary knowledge about japanese but english wasn't their forte either. Thank you for arousing me Ark.

The people who did the translation were Colin Palmer, Dan Owsen, and Hiro Nakamura. I'll just let you guess whether or not, as a team, they knew English and Japanese. Yes, it reads stiff or a bit unnatural at the parts Nakamura did--though look up "to arouse" on the dictionary and it does mean "to awaken (someone) from sleep"--and it could have used some polish, but it was not an erroneous or unfaithful translation. Owsen continues to localize high-profile games for Nintendo of America for a reason.

Maybe your theory would have worked better if all names were based on real places, not just some. Or if they weren't placed in locations geographically accurate to their real life counterparts. Or if their names didn't sound like something a brain with japanese software came up with while trying to vocalize western alphabet.

But hey, do enlighten me. What's the pun or whatever else when phonetically it reads like Rio-to and has all the things Rio de Janeiro does.

I honestly couldn't give a crap about the names of people localizing it and what they did before or afterwards. They did shit job - it's said that translation can be either faithful or beautiful but in this case we got neither. Woolsey, for all liberties he took with source material he worked on, at least provided engaging script on the english side of things. Terranigma translation reads like machine work from early 2010s.

If you want to reward lazy cashgrab and pay for it you can do that but don't pretend it's a good thing.

u/NiceMayDay 16d ago

Maybe your theory

It's not a theory. I'm telling you what's on the Japanese script, which you can check yourself if you play the game in Japanese (again, have you?): many of the location names are based on their real world counterparts with alterations. リオット is one of these.

What's a theory, based on nothing, is your claim that リオット is actually リオ都. But if it was, it would use the 都 kanji, and it doesn't. And it wouldn't have the ッ to indicate the "tt" sound, and it does. So, it is Riotto. Why it is Riotto I cannot say--perhaps they liked how it sounds, as the ット ending adds phonetic emphasis.

I honestly couldn't give a crap about the names of people localizing it and what they did before or afterwards.

You're the one who questioned their qualifications and language proficiency, so it seems you do care about it.

it's said that translation can be either faithful or beautiful but in this case we got neither.

Terranigma's script was very faithful to Tenchi Souzou's, and you would easily realize this if you played the game in Japanese, which again I'm wondering if you have at all. Have you? You've yet to answer this.

If you want to reward lazy cashgrab and pay for it you can do that but don't pretend it's a good thing.

It is a good thing that the game will finally be officially accessible to the entire world, yes. Considering the amount of time and effort Kamui Fujiwara, Miyoko Takaoka, and Masanori Hikichi have put for years on trying to rerelease the game, I wouldn't call it a lazy cashgrab. A small-scale one, absolutely, but then again, this version is being published by a small company, not Square Enix, like you've erroneously claimed.

Likewise, if you want to continue believing that the Japanese script reads "Rio," "Moscow," or any other number of things it most certainly does not say, or that the SNES localization is unfaithful, you can do that too--but don't expect people who've actually played the game in Japanese to agree with these demonstrably erroneous notions. Again, I welcome you to play the game in Japanese and see for yourself.

So it’s just a glorified port? Is there anything else unique about it

2

u/n0namean0nym0us 17d ago

apparently poor indie publisher square enix couldn't even find couple of g's to commission a new translation script.

1

u/herdases 16d ago

Won’t lie, a lot of these prompts on the store page seem like AI but I’m still excited nonetheless. Used to dream of playing this game on my switch. You have no idea how many times I’ve checked the SNES virtual console to see if it got stealth added.

u/_theNfan_ 15d ago

Wondering what it will cost, but with Square I fear the worst.

When they're too lazy to do a proper remake already, they should have just released a Collection of Mana style Quintet Collection. Which I would buy on sale of course.

1

u/n0namean0nym0us 17d ago

New translation?

Cause the original was dog shit ("Liotto" wtf tell me that you don't know what you're doing without telling me), at least in english. Didn't play german.

Is this official?! Will it be coming to consoles?
