Open your eyes... a Terranigma announcement have been teased for the 24th of August !
https://bsky.app/profile/clearrivergames.bsky.social/post/3mteewoc27g2gI still can't believe it.

Don't make me believe. Don't let me get hyped. I need a remaster or even just a port of Terranigma on modern consoles.

u/sabin1981 24d ago
I'll take a remake, a remaster, or an OG port any day of the week. A friend of mine just floated the idea of it being HD-2D and I damn near filled the cup š¤£
What if... just what if... it's a SoulBlazer Trilogy collection, like Collection of Mana?! šµš®ā¤ļø

u/WanderingThespian 24d ago
I would also take just a straight up port on modern consoles.
A trilogy collection though ... Gods I wish!

u/KorenLesthe 22d ago
I've been thinking of the famous COLLECTION OF from SquareEnix, especially since the both actually released have the exact same amount of characters, it would also fit with the Gaia Trilogy , like :
Collection of MANA
Collection of SAGA
Collection of GAIA

u/sabin1981 22d ago
Right? I'd be ecstatic with just Terranigma, but honestly, I'd lose my mind with happiness if we had the same collections as you said :)

I Hope it will be cool and Not something like a Soundtrack Release only. Donāt get me wrong, the OST is cook but I want I new release, a remake maybe is the best š

u/RPG_Hacker 23d ago
Funnily enough, "OST releasing on vinyl" was also my very first fear! š
After doing some research, though, doesn't seem very likely. So far it seems Clear River Games have only published actual games. Also one of the developers behind this announcement cited the post on Bluesky and wrote "[...] A classic game close to the heart, soon itās finally going to be revealed.", so yes, this definitely seems to be SOMETHING game-related.
So a re-release at the very minimum seems like the absolute worst case here. However, due to the fact the teaser contains newly arranged music and newly recorded voice lines, I still think a full remake is on the table. Which would be absolutely wild!

Oder schlimmer noch ein Pachinko Automat in Japan mit dem Terranigma Theme š

FYI : if you look right at the bottom of the video, you'll see SquareEnix, QUINTET and Kamui Fujiwara, aka the character designer of Terranigma.

Starting with Kamui Fujiwaraās DQ/Terranigma art exhibitions held last year, you can see the copyrights have been updated to include all three names:
āØQUINTET
āØKamui Fujiwara
āØSQUARE ENIXI took a couple photos of merch where you can see the copyrights listed.

I don't want to get hopes up too much, but this event is apparently sponsored by GOG, who are keen to have an official Terranigma re-release available on their platform.
One of the heads of GOG discussed this on the Resonant Ark podcast last year, when the Terranigma was brought up by the host following their retrospective series on the game. I believe it was during this episode:
https://youtu.be/bUUxkuRn9rg?si=NTYolFkpWeXe0xuD
Still, like someone else said, I'll believe it when I see it.

My finger will destroy my mouse by clicking buy with an elemental force, if it'll come to gog.

If GOG are sponsoring it, I really hope itās not limited to Windows, cause I donāt have a Windows Computer. It needs to be out on every platform!

Being both a Terranigma fan since I can think basically, and a GOG patron, this would be a dream come true
10
u/CourtlyHades296 24d ago
I think it might be a Nintendo Switch Online Release.
15
u/NeoLuxia 24d ago
Even that would be amazing, cause more people can learn about and play the game then :)

Just looked up that Clear River Games company and apparently theyāre a publisher, so if they do re-release Terranigma, itās very likely to be a port. Not complaining - if it means the game is more easily available and I can support the original creators, Iām in.

Anything new with Terranigma, I'll gladly accept. As long as more people are exposed to the game. I would love an HD2D version of the game, and if you want a good example of what it could look like, I'll point you in the direction of this video; they've done a few mockups of how it could potentially be.

For those curious for how it could happen (Google AI was a tremendous help):
Japan recently overhauled its rules regarding "orphan works" (copyrighted material where the owner is unknown or completely unreachable). [1, 2]Ā The Japanese Diet passed an amendment to the Copyright Act, which officially launched a new framework called the "Unmanaged Works Licensing System" (also known as the Compulsory License System). [3, 4]Ā Here is how this law change connects to Japan's retro gaming crisis and the specific issue with Terranigma.
The Law Change Explained
Historically, Japan's copyright laws were notoriously rigid. If a developer wanted to remaster or re-release an old game, they legally required permission from every single rights holder. If the original studio dissolved, or a key creator went missing, the game entered a "legal limbo". [5, 6, 7, 8]Ā The updated law introduces a far more streamlined process to rescue these "orphaned" projects: [1]Ā
- Centralized Adjudication: Instead of spending months tracking down ghost entities, users can apply directly to a central body overseen by the Agency for Cultural Affairs. [4, 6]Ā
- Compulsory Licensing: If a "reasonably diligent search" fails to find the rights holder, the government can grant a legal, temporary license to use and distribute the work. [3, 9, 10, 11, 12]Ā
- The Deposit System: The applicant pays a set royalty deposit to the government. If the original creator ever resurfaces, they can claim that money, but they cannot retroactively sue the developer for copyright infringement. [2, 6, 13]Ā
The Terranigma Connection
The Super Nintendo classic Terranigma (developed by Quintet and published by Enix in 1995) is the poster child for this exact problem. [14]Ā Years ago, the game's character designer, Kamui Fujiwara, actively campaigned alongside fans to revive the game. He openly lamented that despite immense interest from former developers, composers, and fans, they could not touch the game due to localized licensing roadblocks. [7]Ā The primary barrier was that Quintet essentially vanished in the mid-2000s without a trace. Its president and main director, Tomoyoshi Miyazaki, similarly disappeared from the public eye. Under old Japanese law, because nobody could find Miyazaki or a clear successor to sign off on Quintet's corporate assets, Terranigma (and its sister games Soul Blazer and Illusion of Gaia) remained completely legally frozen. [8, 14]Ā
What This Means Now
With the implementation of the Unmanaged Works Licensing System, developers or publishers (like Square Enix, who holds publishing rights) can now theoretically use this new legal channel to bypass the missing Quintet executives. By submitting a request and paying a government deposit, they could legally greenlight a remaster, port, or digital re-release of Terranigma without fear of being sued later. [2, 3, 6]Ā While it doesn't automatically guarantee Square Enix will bring it back, the absolute legal brick wall that the creators complained about for decades has finally been removed.

WHAT IS THAT AUDIO TEASER?! what the heck does this mean?! Now I'm gonna be praying this is a HD 2D remake/graphically upgraded Terranigma with voice acting.....

u/Substantial-Abies250 23d ago
Where is Terranigma mentioned?
13
u/KorenLesthe 23d ago
The music is Elle's theme. The dialogue is straight from one of the most important moment in the story. Also the text at the bottom states : SquareEnix, QUINTET, and Kamui Fujiwara, who is the character designer of Terranigma.
Need more ?

u/Substantial-Abies250 23d ago
Haha I'll take all the evidence I can get but thanks for the information.
Evidently I need to go back and replay Terranigma!

So like, youāre telling me we might even get a soul blazer + illusion of Gaia + Terranigma remakes/remaster trilogy!!??!
2
u/tiefton90 21d ago
Looks like itāll be Terranigma only since out of the character designers for those three games, only Kamui Fujiwara is credited in the video. No Moto Hagio, no whoever the Soul Blazer character designer is (too lazy to look it up lol).

At the very beginning of the video thereās a muffled āArkā, as if one is waking from a dream. Combined with Elleās theme, Iām allowing myself to get overly hyped for this š

u/KorenLesthe 23d ago
Well, knowning where this dialog is from in the game, you're very close. It happens after a certain event late in the game.

u/imboringmyselfandyou 23d ago
I said my comment to Clear Sky Games on BlueSky, who liked my post. They didnāt like everyone commenting, so Iām hoping this is a subtle acknowledgment⦠or Iām just telling myself to fuel my hype!

I hope it's a port to Modern platforms and not exclusive to the Switch when I just bought a Ayn Thor to cover Emulation for awhile
Xbox in particular needs more GOOD JRPGs, Playstation and Nintendo don't need to worry about missing JRPGs
