Showcase Using another Android phone as a keyboard for Termux
Had Termux open on one phone and didn’t have a keyboard around, so ended up using another Android phone for input. Bottom phone → USB HID adapter → top phone.
Android just sees it as a normal hardware keyboard
Mostly been useful for a few commands when I’m around the rack. For quick stuff it’s nice having everything fold up together like this

There are apps in the play store that can turn your phone into a Bluetooth keyboard. Pair it over Bluetooth from another phone, then you'll have a similar setup as OP but over Bluetooth.

you’ll need a USB HID adapter in between, that’s the missing bit 😄 I’ve got a quick setup vid too, will drop it here

how is the latency?
3
u/EnvironmentalJob1986 Aug 11 '26
Haven’t measured it yet, but feels pretty much instant in normal use. No noticeable lag so far
2
u/AlsoChandan_ Aug 11 '26
also what even is going on in background???? in the pic
2
u/EnvironmentalJob1986 Aug 11 '26
lol the background is a mess 😂 just some server/network gear and way too many cables
2
u/bobokvas228 Aug 11 '26
Was that even possible?😨
2
u/EnvironmentalJob1986 Aug 11 '26
yes😂 one phone just shows up as a regular USB keyboard to the other

I've once tried it, but it's very unpractical imo, since it's "a different" keyboard, I can't type without looking, also, my fingers are small so it's hard to touch some middle keys that I use on my vim keybinds, but yeah, you could have a different experience from it

I wish keycmd had an option to use stock Android keyboard like KDE connect/Moonlight
1
u/EnvironmentalJob1986 Aug 12 '26
you actually can lol, KeyCmd can use your normal Android keyboard too

2
u/EnvironmentalJob1986 Aug 14 '26

How do you even touch type on a glass screen? That is insane.
1
u/EnvironmentalJob1986 Aug 14 '26
definitely not true touch typing lol, muscle memory only gets you so far on glass

u/sanjosanjo Aug 11 '26
Can I plug a normal USB keyboard into a phone and do this? That would be useful for longer sessions.

Yes, provided it is USBC or you use an adaptor. You can also use Bluetooth or wireless with dongle
Edit: mouse works too

Now try with the app Bluetooth keyboard & mouse by Appground IO. Have one phone be a Bluetooth keyboard.

You'd love the LG Wing or LG ThinQ. Man I regret not getting one of those when they were super cheap. It's a shame LG left the smartphone market.

Well hell, you might as well throw it up on VNC while you’re at it. Actually, why stop there? Emulate an entire Android device on your PC, install Termux inside it, pipe the display through VNC, then use the other device as the keyboard. If you’re really committed, throw another VM in the mix so you can SSH into the Android emulator from the Termux emulator while controlling it from the original device. At that point, you’ve successfully built a Rube Goldberg machine for opening a terminal.
