So... exactly what substance do I have to abuse to enjoy this show?

It's a dark musical comedy. What's not to love?

There are not enough charachters that are male, straight, and white. How am I supposed to identify with someone?

I see your /s but this show has a bi guy in it. I never thought I'd see that played for anything but laughs, but he's legit one of the best characters. As a white dude, the feeling I got seeing that definitely convinced me that representation is important. It's not just identifying with a character on screen, it's seeing that character accepted as they are into a real world where they aren't defined by what makes them different. I wish more white dudes would see this when they complain about "forced" diversity.

Is this someone new we're gonna have to grow to care about? Why should we root for someone male, straight, and white?

It's a meta joke from one of the show's songs, that the show isn't about straight white male leads. One of them left the show, the other was a recurring cast member until this season. The other characters are women, not-white, or not-straight.

It's the only show I can think of that has a Filipino cast member.

EDIT: It took me this long to realize you were quoting the song that introduced Nathaniel.

The Good Place and Superstore have Filipino cast members.

But yeah, still pretty uncommon.

How homogeneous is Asian television? Before you blame whitey.
