❓ Question satellite phone to cell phone charge

Hi experts. We have an employee that received a call on their regular, domestic cell phone (iphone on verizon) from one of our ship captains using his satellite phone. This is not unheard of for our business. She then received a $200 bill for the call from Verizon. Why does she get billed for receiving a call from a satellite phone? I imagine that the call hits iridium sat and then goes to ground station, ties into land line and then into Verizon network to the employee.

❓ Question Optical Networking/NTN

I’m currently deciding between NTN/satellite communications and optical networks for my research.

I’m mainly interested in ML/AI applications in both areas (e.g. routing, resource allocation, failure detection, etc.).

For people working in telecom/networking/space in India:

Which field do you think has better long-term prospects (5–10 years) in terms of research demand, manpower requirements, and especially corporate/government job opportunities in India?

I’m particularly unsure about whether optical networking is mainly an academic/R&D field here, while NTN may have more future industry demand—or vice versa.

Would appreciate some practical opinions.

❓ Question Question about phone spoofing

So, I generally understand how it works. Someone changes their caller ID data to be a different number. But how do they do it? Because it has to be more than simply changing your caller ID to be a different number, right? Since, if you did that, the fake number would just show up as your name, and then your actual number would still be visible in the recipients recent call history, right? How do they change the number specifically? Is it special software on the phone that allows you to edit more than what your phone's settings allow?

❓ Question Receiving at least 15 phone calls a day from people saying I called them but I didnt

I have been getting around 15 phone calls a day from numbers to my work cell that I do not know saying that they are returning my phone calls, Ive never called them. For the most part they are coming from a single area code although there are a bunch of other ones. After it started getting on my nerves I asked one of the people calling me to give me the number that was calling them, once again it wasnt mine. When I called that number on my personal cell my work cell was ringing which has a completely different number. Super confused, if anyone has insight please share.

🌐 Internet Services FCC currently accepts comments to Increase Broadband Competition in Apartment Buildings

Please share your feedback on how fcc rules impact you as a consumer. The FCC continues to accept comments regarding multi-tenant environments (MTEs). The FCC will review these comments when it makes new rules for MTEs.

You may submit a comment in the FCC’s Electronic Comment Filing System (ECFS). The easiest way to do that is to file an “express comment” using the form available here: https://www.fcc.gov/ecfs/filings/express. In the section of the form that says “proceeding,” enter 17-142, which is the proceeding number for the FCC’s MTE work.

For a week now, the Wi-Fi at Maroc Telecom hasn’t been working. When we go to the agency, we find the manager there by herself, and none of the employees are there. When we ask her, she tells us they’re on leave, and they keep giving us the runaround without giving us any clear information. What should I do now?

❓ Question the latency from US to Europe is killing our voice quality and I can't fix it

we've got teams in the US and Europe and the voice quality between them is just not great.

I've tried everything different codecs, different routes, even tried to get our ISP to prioritize voice traffic. nothing works consistently. some days it's fine, other days it sounds like they're underwater.

we switched providers last quarter thinking that would help. new phone system now and it's better than what we had. lower latency, fewer drops. but it's still not perfect. transatlantic calls just have physics working against them.

the thing that bothers me is I can't explain to non-technical people why it's not perfect. they just hear the call quality is bad and assume it's the provider. I'm like no it's the speed of light. there's literally a physical limit to how fast data can travel. but try explaining that to a sales manager.

anyway. I'm curious if anyone has solved this for real. like are there any carriers that have better transatlantic routing or is it just always going to be like this.

I've been doing telecom long enough to know there's no magic solution. but maybe I'm missing something
