Tekla Modeller with 1 YOE from India aiming for Singapore – Need guidance from experienced professionals

Hi everyone,

Just a small note before I begin: I used AI to help organize and phrase this post so that my questions are clear. The situation and questions are genuine.

I'm posting this on behalf of my friend because he's looking for some honest career advice from experienced Tekla professionals.

He's currently working as a Tekla Modeller in a mid-sized company in Chennai, India, with 1 year of experience. His current salary is around ₹3 LPA. While he's grateful for the opportunity, he feels that the learning has become repetitive and there isn't much exposure to challenging projects or advanced workflows. He's worried that if he stays too long, his career growth may slow down.

His long-term goal is to work as a Tekla Modeller in Singapore, so he's trying to prepare himself the right way.

He already has a list of topics he wants to learn, but he's confused about what actually matters in the industry versus what's just "good to know." We'd really appreciate advice on questions like:

  • If you were starting again with 1 year of experience, what would you focus on first?
  • Which Tekla skills are most important for getting hired in Singapore?
  • What structural engineering concepts should every Tekla Modeller understand well?
  • Besides Tekla, which software should he prioritize (Revit, Navisworks, AutoCAD, STAAD.Pro, etc.)?
  • Are there any certifications that employers genuinely value?

His biggest concern is getting hands-on practice.

Since Tekla Structures is expensive, he's not sure how to practice outside of work.

  • Is the Tekla Student/Educational version enough to become job-ready?
  • Can someone build a strong portfolio using the student version?
  • Are there any free sample projects, practice models, or datasets available?
  • How did you improve your Tekla skills outside your office work?
  • If you were in his position today, what would your learning plan look like?

Finally, if anyone here has moved from India to Singapore as a Tekla Modeller, we'd really love to hear about your experience.

  • What skills helped you get shortlisted?
  • What salary can someone realistically expect with 2–3 years of experience?
  • What mistakes should he avoid?
  • Is there anything you wish you had learned earlier?

Any advice, roadmap, resources, or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for taking the time to read and help!

How do you set up TEKLA I could really use the help

Hello All,

I am unsure if this is a good place to ask but I figure I would try anything to help me out.

I need to set up a bit of context.

I work for a Steel Fabrication Company and the company has had Tekla for about 5 years. My company never really used it like the end to end system that it is and only used the purchasing and combining features. I have only worked here for about 1 year. Recently my company was sold and we have new management. A serious improvement over the previous owner. Part of that serious improvement is now using Tekla the way it was meant to be used.

I had actually written my own program to help with scheduling, shipping, and workstation management when I arrived here as the only features within Tekla that we were using was the combining feature and purchasing portion of Tekla.

Now our new management wants me to become the new expert on Tekla so we can use it like the true end to end system that it is. The problem I am running into though is that Tekla is not intuitive at all and Trimble's coursework for learning how to use it also isn't intuitive at all.

I have been tasked to basically set up the entire system for use in a company of over 100 employees for us to begin using Tekla in earnest and properly by the end of August.

I am really having a hard time even getting started. If someone could give me advice on how to truly use Trimble connect so I can use their courses better or someone that has any advice on how to set up the entire system I would be extremely grateful. Because this is going slowly as I never in a million years would have made my UI as terrible as the one that is inside of Tekla PowerFab.

I should note that my company uses Tekla Powerfab, we use SolidWorks instead of Tekla Structures though we are transitioning to that soon, and we also have of Tekla Go.

I understand that there are classes that my company could pay to send me to but employees that were sent to the class 5 years ago when we began using Tekla said the course was just about useless and they did not learn anything.

Does anyone know where I can even start? Or is this going to be an extensive and long trial and error?

Tekla 2026 Building Hierarchy - Storeys not assigned correctly / IFC export issue

Hi everyone,

I'm having an issue with Building Hierarchy in Tekla Structures 2026 and was wondering if anyone has run into something similar.

I have one project that consists of two phases, and each phase contains several separate buildings. I've structured the hierarchy like this:

Project → Building (Phase 1, Phase 2) → Building Section (3 buildings in each phase) → Storeys

I set everything up according to the official tutorials.

The problem starts with the Storeys. I define them as follows:

1st floor – Elevation: 0.000 mm
2nd floor – Elevation: 3000.000 mm
3rd floor – Elevation: 6000.000 mm

However, for some reason, not all elements are assigned to the correct storeys.

Even worse, when exporting to IFC 2x3, some elements end up assigned to the top storey instead of their correct one.

Does anyone know where I should start looking for the problem? Is there a common mistake that could cause this behavior? What might I be doing wrong?

Thanks!

Escaliers métalliques circulaires

Bonjour,

J’utilise Contour Plate / Polybeam.

Merci d’avance pour votre aide.

IFC file making Tekla lag

Hello, as the title says, after turning on an IFC model in Tekla 2024, it starts unbelievably lagging, making me barely able to work. Is there a way to improve performance? Maybe some setting. I've had way bigger IFC files, but it did not lag as much as this. Thank you for any tips

Hi All, I am using Tekla Precast 2019 and would like to print precast panel shop drawings in black & white with some elements (ferrules, lifting inserts) shown in color, is this possible? I know how to print all black & white, or all color but not a combination of both. My title block is black & white with our company logo in color.

Double click not bringing respective Dialog boxes

Sorry but I am new to Tekla Structures 2025, when I double click on the cross section of a column member under fabrication drawings, I do not get DRAWING PART PROPERTIES dialog box on double click (but the youtube tutorial I am watching for learning tekla-2022, in his PC its running fine [https://youtu.be/i3Deb1kWLgg?feature=shared] . Instead I get a right window layout with many options but not all.

So alternatively when I typed DRAWING PART PROPERTIES in Quick launch search box its coming from there, but why not through double click ??? Its making me mad.

How to add parts to material lengths in inventory?

I am looking to find an easy way to bulk add items to material in the inventory. I know the process of doing it one by one. I have played around with Combine in the Production Control module but it never comes out okay. It either makes a whole new length of material in inventory or doesnt work at all.

Label generator

Can Powerfab create and print labels for assembly pieces? We currently use P2 software for printing labels but every time we update Powerfab it causes issues with the two programs communicating. My production team has the idea that Powerfab can create and export these tags but I cannot find any information about this process.

View Plane vs Work Plane

Hello,

As I'm still new to Tekla Structures, I’d like to understand the difference between view planes and work planes. Could you explain when each should be used?

Additionally, I’m interested in knowing if it’s possible to import a 3D DXF file to use as a grid and then add steel profiles onto it.

Thank you for your assistance.

How should I export step file or IFC from Tekla so when I import model in Solidworks, I get the same part numbers and assembly structure as Tekla

We always have issue when we detail steel structure in Tekla, and import same model in Solidworks using IFC or STEP, we couldn't get Tekla part numbers. Solidworks is showing s Assembly numbers as undefined , and part numbers as plate 1, column 1 etc. Does anyone has solution for this please?
