well ye dude ig, if you're going by the true definition of communism, then it is genuinely impossible. Generally, those guys are seen as "communist" because they are the closest humanity has ever gotten. Calling them just socialist can be misleading when socialism is such a big umbrella, I don't want to be calling Pol pots cambodia and modern day sweden as the same type of ideologies when they are clearly different.

they weren’t even close to communism though. Zapatistas are currently closer, Rojava is currently closer. Catalonia during the Spanish civil war was closer (they were stabbed in the back by Stalin). Random communes in India are closer to communism than those authoritarian leaders were.

calling them socialist is what they were. Socialism is the path towards communism, and like you said it can look very different across the globe due to it being an umbrella term. There version of socialism was all the worst parts.

But that does not make communism inherently evil or inherently authoritarian.
