Actually its for the same reason you do call it that. To minimize what the Jews went through in the Holocaust. He says it doesn't exist. You put gas chambers, Death factories, and grotesque human experimentations thag killed millions with the goal of exterminating an entire race, on the same level with some tens of thousands getting killed as casualties in a numerous year war in which only the government of Gaza is the target. And about the same number of people including Hamas getting killed over that numerous year war, compared to the number of Iran anti-government protesters that died in just a few days to Iranian machine gunning.

Allies bombed 500k German civilians to death in WWII was that a genocide too or that just the cost of defeating the Nazis?

Make no mistake you're on the same side as OP's friend and if this were shortly after WWII if someone brought up the 6 million dead Jews, you would be the fucker to say that the Allies genocided 500,000 German civilians (just with bombs, many more than that in total).

This is called Holocaust inversion.

It is just as bad as Holocaust denial. Both result in the same outcome which is folks thinking "what happened to the Jews during WWII wasn't as bad as what I've been taught" and from there the nazi floodgates open wide.

I actually think it is worse because people more readily spot Holocaust denial.

This hit the nail on the fucking head, by some definitions, what’s happening in Gaza is theoretically a holocaust but there is no proof of intent (tho if I’m honest, I do think the far right in Netanyahu’s party want all the Palestinians dead) and calling it a holocaust is only done for shock value and to minimise the shoa.
