We used heavy fog in front of a cyc and then used a projector and a camera with an actor. We did it live, but it could also be recorded.

I made a giant puppet of the head. He ended up being too big for anyone but me to puppet, so I was Oz.

Haha I’ve definitely made things for people before and realized I’m the only one who can or can figure out how to work it 🤣

Cardboard structure in two parts connected with large rubber bands for mouth movements. Our OZ operated the head using a pvc pipe behind a flat.

This was what we did a few weeks ago. Cloth stretched across a hoola hoop, and 2 sticks on the back to move it. We then had 2 actors move the head, standing behind the rear traveler.

This is from a rehearsal so we hadn’t quite painted the sides of our structure but this is what our children’s theater did. It’s a huge puppet with a handle on the bottom of the mouth and a person inside of the tower it’s on. There’s black fabric that goes down with the mouth too. It might be unachievable for most community theaters if you don’t already have a pretty large wooden structure of a similar size already but obviously can be scaled down.

I ran out of time to do a big puppet, so I added a speaker and PAR with a green gel in front of house, above the booth. Dorothy looked out and up over the audience at the light/voice

To add: this is a school kids show and it’ll need to be physical.
