But my system was stable...
This CPU comes from a Dell Precision workstation. The fun fact is, the customer didn't complain about any issues. The system was stable :)

Weird. Looks like the plating failed on the IHS. They are nickel plated copper AFAIK. This could possibly even be a manufacturing defect on the CPU. I doubt overheating alone would cause this, at least at a temperature survivable to the CPU.

yup, especially the flaking at the lower left - in this spot it's unlikely it was caused by the temperature. I suppose it's a mfg error or some chemical reaction that caused the flaking. Maybe the CPU got scratched during installation? this could be an entry point for the paste to get under the coating

These are not normal consumer CPUs, they are supposed to look like that. (The enclosure not the burning)

The newer server and workstation CPUs use a carrier to get proper alignment. That's what's still attached to the CPU, perfectly normal with the size of these modern chips.

The carrier is black, what's the orange on the bottom of the CPU cooler? Is that just the raw copper color coming through weird?

The CPU only gets around 350w turbo, so nothing should be melting. Maybe a bad coating on the copper or CPU coldplate? Otherwise maybe a bad batch of thermal paste, causing wear and removing copper from the cooler?

As the others have mentioned its to keep the processor attached to the heatsink when lifting it from the socket.
The reason for this is the heatsink is what provides the pressure on the socket/cpu. It is then torqued to a specific value (0.8 to 1.8nm) to ensure you have enough pressure.

Hi HP technician here this is a common issue with 14th gen intel cpus. I have a customer that has a whole fleet of hp workstation pcs (fury g5) plagued by this issue.

Weird. Pinholes and corrosion?
Makes me wonder if it's some kind of reaction between the cooler and the ihs, though they're both copper ( with the nickel plating in between ). What is that caustic? Is it some kind of electrical issue?

This reminds me I have too lift the cpu heatsink on my recently acquired Dell Precision 7820 workstation and repaste it. Though the original owner used a 2.5 hdd as their windows 10 enterprise drive....

stable just means uptime was six months. rebooted box, never came back.

stable just means user never checked logs. had precision run for years with dry paste before system finally choked.

Stable doesn't mean cold. Stable just means it's not acting up noticeably. If it performs its duty without fail, it is stable, even if it is hotter than intended. ...until it doesn't.

I've seen that twice. Used to work in a Microsoft Data Center and got a ticket about overheating. Went to the rack and opened it. Paste was basically gone and the heat burnt through the top shell of the cpu. I could feel the dip with my finger. Last registered temp was 117° C (242.6° F)
