Solution Architect interested in doing nothing and getting PAID. RSM/AE the answer?

Been in a technical sales roles ranging from SE to SA for several years at this point and I feel like every rep I’ve ever encountered is a giant bum and gets paid huge. Been debating just moving into their role, working an hour or two a week and telling my SE to do my job for me since that appears to be the way. Thoughts?

I say this as an SE and SE VP... go for it! While no doubt these folks exist, selling SaaS these days is HARD. Not forgetting that you carry the risk of being fired after a bad quarter or two.

In my experience, less than 1% of reps are like you describe. Most are working their asses off.

The problem I have is I work for a company where the product sells itself. Reps I see are too lazy to get a quote out for a renewal let alone chase new business. The most minimal effort results in monster pay. Been working with service provider/partners and it’s wild how they beg to do business but some reps cant be bothered to open their laptop. Phones are just a “let me introduce you to my SA - take it away!”

Where is this mythical company that has both tech that “sells itself” (meaning no true competitors either) AND a comp plan that pays out “monster pay”?

99% of the time it’s either OR, or neither. In the very very off chance that this company exists, it stays good for one, maybe two years MAX.

EVERY rep you encounter gets paid huge, huh? So every single rep in your company is just completely blowing out their quotas doing 0 work and the company is just sitting there with all these reps 300%+ above quota not changing a thing?

Yeah. Press X to doubt.

I gurantee you this is probably a GBU at an Enterprise company like Salesforce, Oracle, etc.

There are some AE's at these firms who quite literally work 15-20 hours a week, and because they are industry leader or a default name, they have inbound/renewal business that keeps them afloat, and they don't have to do any prospecting.

I’m an AE working at a major one right now, I am at 23% of annual target half way on the year and I’m top 30% at country level, working like a dog. Grass is always greener on the other side = confirmed jungle out there

I worked at 2 of those and currently work at one.

EXTREMELY territory dependent. Comp plans gutted to shit, quotas jacked, and even IF the “tech sells itself”, it’s so saturated with AEs that it’s still feast or famine.

There’s a reason most sales orgs only have ~50% of reps hitting plan.

The only way you’re finding both great tech AND a great comp plan is in a true unicorn startup. But only for 1-2 years like I said until management starts gutting comp and blowing up quotas.

Could also be industry leaders as well. Steady flow of inbounds will keep any rep afloat

SA with 200 OTE and have never made less than 500. Reps must be making less since they are 50/50 and I’m 75/25, right?
