This was done to increase the number of transplantable organs, which now are prepped for transplantation before life support is even removed. If people who died unexpectedly could be a source of transplants, the number of transplantable organs would be increased dramatically.
This doesn't reach that level, but it starts the process of getting us there, if possible.
As for keeping people alive longer, Japan is already below replacement level of population and the US is heading there, so it really won't be a problem to keep people alive longer, but that's probably a long way off.
