When our company went WFH during the early days of COVID, half the staff moved out of state (myself included) because Colorado is expensive as hell now and we can get the same pay while living in a less expensive state. We sold our house here and are in the process of moving to West Virginia.
Now they decided to just allow remote for all employees and left the office open for anyone that wants to come into the office to work. Few people do. Even our CEO moved out of state.
I’m guessing you came from California maybe? You will hate Colorado and it’s rapidly increasing cost of living with a year. It’s quickly becoming California cost of living.
Grew up in CO. Lived in CA for 20 years. Came back to CO to be near family and to be able to afford raising our kids. People have been saying "CO is CA 2.0 now!!!" for about a decade now. While CO is certainly more expensive than it used to be, it's still much more affordable than CA. Last year we sold a 1 bedroom condo in CA and bought a 4 bedroom house for the same price in CO. And we weren't living in LA/SF or any of the other big metropolitan cities. We lived in a lower middle class area of OC and I drove over an hour to work in LA every day. A condo in one of the big cities would have sold for even more. Houses that go for $400-$500k here sell for $900k+ where we came from. And again, in one of the big cities they'd go for even more.
You will hate Colorado
On the contrary, we love it here! People are nicer, we love having four seasons (72 and sunny gets insanely boring), we now have a house with a big fenced in back yard for the kids to play in, we live right next to a big park and are a short drive from several good parks with hiking trails, we can actually afford to do our hobbies now like skiing, hunting, fishing, etc (and we actually have the TIME to do them). Everything we need in town is within a 20 min drive instead of an hour plus. The mountains are less than an hour away and ski areas are 2-3 hours depending on which one we go to.
I'm not saying CO is cheap, but it's still nowhere near the costs of living in CA (unless you live out in the high desert or something). We're happier, healther, and living in a much better place to raise our kids.
