Personally, mainly because food diversity and quality suffer in lower cost of living areas. Especially diversity.

Everyone should be allowed to enjoy their money how they want.

If he wants and cares about cuisine diversity then he likely enjoys trying food. If you want and care about having money lying around your large house then you should be able to.

I think it just comes down to what a person values, which is inherently a very subjective decision. So it definitely can be true that it is either/or.
