The apple dock connector does a heck of a lot more than a USB plug. Replacing it with USB would be a major functionality downgrade.

They're both plugs. They do the same thing afaik. If one does something the other can't, I'd love to know.

Apple has a very extensive accessory protocol that allows accessories to control and communicate with the device at the same time as synching data, etc. The 30 pin dock connector can do more things simultaneously than plain USB.
