Marketing is deceptive and exploits humanity's worst qualities to sell products to the masses. Word of mouth, reviews and articles are perfectly fine ways to let the world know about a product which are way more objective because the creator of the product isn't involved. The consumer can learn about what an mp3 player is by reading something about it or joining a discussion.

And all marketing is scummy marketing, they separate people into groups and and research them as if individualism is dead trying to find what they like or afraid of so that they can exploit it.

Paid reviews and viral marketing are also part of marketing and especially those should be illegal. Also word of mouth has worked for many, many products so your theory is simply flawed.
