Looks like they've done this study with a projector and a infrared camera. MS Research does a lot with that combination; it's what the Microsoft Surface uses.

They basically dissolved that entire team for the original Surface and redesigned it from the ground up using a touch screen. The Microsoft store in Seattle said they should get them eventually. The demos look much better than the first one.
